The Grudge Returns in First Official Reboot Trailer

The horrifying first trailer for Nicolas Pesce's upcoming The Grudge reboot promises a new twist on the horror classic.

The trailer opens with Peter Spencer (John Cho) entering a home that seems to be possessed by an angry entity. After investigating the house, Detective Muldoon (Andrea Riseborough) realizes that something has followed her home. Fans of The Grudge series will recognize the unnerving throat rattling sound heard throughout the trailer.

The Grudge is said to serve as the fourth installment of the American film series that began in 2004. Evil Dead writer/director Sam Raimi, who produced the 2004 film, is also producing the new one.

The film will star Andrea Riseborough, who has appeared in 2017's The Death of Stalin, 2018's Mandy and an episode of Black Mirror. John Cho, portrays Spike Spiegel in Netflix's upcoming live-action adaptation of the Cowboy Bebop anime series, will also star in The Grudge. Also appearing in the film are Demián Bichir, John Cho, Betty Gilpin, Lin Shaye and more.

The Grudge film series is based off the Japanese film Ju-On: The Curse, which released in 2000. Several sequels, novels and comics have spawned from the original film

The Grudge is written and directed by Nicolas Pesce, with Sam Raimi, Robert Tapert and Takashige Ichise producing. The film is set to release on Jan. 3, 2020.
