The second Deadpool movie is arriving to theaters on May 18, 2018 and we couldn’t be more excited about it. Judging by the promotional posters and the trailer we’re in for quite the ride. In his typical fashion, Deadpool continues to break the fourth wall, commenting on the bad CGI in Justice League and criticizing his own film for lazy writing. Surprisingly enough, we didn’t catch a Green Lantern reference, but maybe because the first Deadpool movie was packed with them.
As we all know, both Green Lantern and Deadpool are portrayed by Ryan Reynolds. And in the first Deadpool movie, Wade Wilson took some shots at his past superhero alter ego. But Reynolds is far from being the only one who gets to have fun with this. The internet, in all of its glory and hilarity, has lots of awesome memes about the rivalry between these two heroes. The Deadpool movie is often considered Reynolds’ redemption for the awful Green Lantern movie as well as his equally awful portrayal of the Merc with a Mouth in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. So, let’s take a look at what memes have to say about the rivalry between Reynolds’ two roles. Here are 15 hilarious Green Lantern vs. Deadpool memes.
15. WE DON’T TALK ABOUT GREEN LANTERN
Alright, the rules are simple. Rule number one, you don’t talk about Green Lantern. Rule number two, you don’t talk about Green Lantern. So, why the hell is this guy casually referencing it? In case you were ever thinking of bringing up the Green Lantern movie to the Merc with a Mouth, we suggest you think on that some more. That is unless you’d like to be turned into the consistency of marmalade, which doesn’t sound like a pleasant experience.
Looks like Deadpool is pretty determined to leave Green Lantern in the past and never talk about it again. And honestly, considering the way that movie went off the rails we can’t exactly blame him for resorting to such drastic measures. Besides, we’d expect nothing less from him.
14. DARK CONFESSION
The Terrible Tiger meme was created by a Redditor under the name of Zachcvh. The first Terrible Tiger meme read “I ate that bear” — referencing the Confession Bear meme. The Terrible Tiger revived the Confession Bear meme and became an alternative for it. The internet is packed with all kinds of disturbing confessions captioned around this poor animal.
Considering everything else we’ve seen this meme being used for, this person’s dark confession doesn’t seem that awful. Although, if you’ve come this far without watching the Green Lantern movie and you’ve already seen Deadpool, watching the former is a risk only you should decide whether to take. Just make sure you have evaluated your choices carefully, weighed the pros and cons, before making up your mind.
13. CONFUSING COSPLAY
No matter how much time we spend looking at all kinds of cosplay photos, these amazing individuals always manage to surprise us. Thanks to their imagination, creativity and skills, cosplayers pull of some pretty incredible stuff but also some pretty weird stuff. Honestly, we still haven’t decided where to file this Deadlantern cosplay.
The idea is awesome, there’s no doubt about it. And, surprisingly enough, it worked out pretty well and doesn’t look half-bad. However, it is still a ridiculous concept. While we do give props to the cosplayer for his imagination, his costume is more of a meme than a typical cosplay. A hilarious meme, nonetheless. We bet this guy got tones of confusing looks walking around the convention in this getup.
12. CHANCE AT REDEMPTION
Even Ryan Reynolds himself has admitted that his role in X-Men Origins: Wolverine was a career low for him. Not, the messy Green Lantern movie, which probably comes at a close second. However, at the time he signed on to play Hal Jordan in the DC Comics movie, Reynolds probably saw it as a chance to redeem himself for X-Men Origins: Wolverine.
As we all know, Green Lantern didn’t turn out to be a glowing success either and Reynolds once again let his fans down and essentially ruined yet another comic book legend. However, this little obstacle didn’t stop him for long and in 2016 Reynolds appeared once again as the Merc with the Mouth in a movie that redeemed him for all of his past lapses in judgment.
11. SHOTS FIRED
The Deadpool movie has been described as fast, funny and gleefully profane. Famous for breaking the fourth wall, Deadpool continued this practice on the big screen. The wisecracking mercenary poked fun at everything and everyone, including himself — so to speak. Since, the Canadian actor Ryan Reynolds portrayed both Green Lantern and Deadpool, the latter often cracked jokes at the former’s expense.
These clever jokes didn’t go over anyone’s head and the fans raveled in all the easter eggs and references. To demonstrate just how many shots Ryan Reynolds took at his previous superhero gig, an anonymous internet comedian created this hilarious meme. You know Deadpool took it way too far if he managed to surpass Whedon firing shots at poor Quicksilver. Not even super speed could save him.
10. IT’S A CONSPIRACY
It’s no secret that the 2011 Green Lantern movie is far from being Ryan Reynolds’ best work. In a lackluster film with shoddy CGI, weak plot, dressed in an atrocious CGI animated costume, Reynolds didn’t stand a chance. The movie sucked and so did he. However, Reynolds still got yet another chance as a superhero in his solo Deadpool movie, which broke box office records and received wide critical acclaim.
So, our resident tin-foil-hat, the Conspiracy Keanu, has ventured a theory about what truly happened to Green Lantern. If this meme is to be trusted, and we don’t see why not, Reynolds intentionally screwed up as Green Lantern so he could be available to play Deadpool once again and redeem himself for X-Men Origins: Wolverine.
9. SPACE WEDGIES
Most of the time, we tend to forget that Ryan Reynolds was Deadpool first, before taking on the role of Green Lantern. In 2009, Reynolds appeared in X-Men Origins: Wolverine as Wade Wilson. Three years later, the actor got another chance in a superhero role, this time as the DC Comics hero Green Lantern. An enthusiastic fan must have drawn this piece with high hopes for the movie. Bet they regret it now.
Nevertheless, the art is pretty hilarious. And if Deadpool ever did get hold of the Green Lantern Ring we can easily imagine him acting this way. There’s no way a character like Deadpool would be able to resist the impulse to make horrible puns and dirty jokes while on duty guarding the galaxy.
8. SOMETIMES ONE SNICKERS IS NOT ENOUGH
While we do our best to forget the abomination the X-Men Origins: Wolverine movie introduced as Deadpool, we will probably never be able to completely get it out of our heads. Sadly, Reynolds’ next attempt at playing a superhero didn’t go over much better. The Green Lantern movie hardly stands among the best of the best.
However, Reynolds is not one to give up easy. After the first Snickers didn’t do the trick and perhaps had the complete opposite effect, the Canadian persisted and reached for the second piece of chocolaty heaven. This time he had better luck and his solo Deadpool movie became one of the most successful superhero films of all time. So, don’t get discouraged if your first Snickers bar doesn’t make you the best you can be. Just reach for another one.
7. A RING OF HIS OWN
Ever since the first promo art for Deadpool was released we could tell the movie had no intention of playing nice. When the first trailer rolled out we knew just what to expect after Deadpool made a reference to the awful suit Reynolds wore in Green Lantern. But while the movie did poke fun at Green Lantern quite often, this poster, sadly, is fan-made.
A very talented fan decided to have some fun by editing the poster for the Green Lantern movie and turning it into an incredible Deadpool poster. Honestly, this is so hilarious and so good at the same time, it makes us wish this was the actual poster for the movie. And might we add, Deadpool’s ring is way cooler than Green Lantern’s.
6. RYAN REYNOLDS LOOKALIKES
When we talk about Ryan Reynolds’ ventures into the world of superhero movies we mostly focus on the Green Lantern movie and his most recent — and most successful — Deadpool franchise. Rarely, do we touch upon his first appearance as Deadpool in X-Men Origins: Wolverine or better yet, his portrayal of Hannibal King in Blade Trinity.
But someone decided to compile all of Reynolds’ superhero roles and point out one glaring issue with these superheroes — they all look like Ryan Reynolds. Apparently, there’s a conspiracy in the movie industry to make as many heroes as possible look like Reynolds and this person thinks it needs to stop. There’s plenty of fish in the see Hollywood, we’re sure you can find a different actor every once in a while.
5. MORTAL KOMBAT
When Ryan Reynolds decided to take the role of Hal Jordan in the Green Lantern movie an interviewer asked him if he had chosen Green Lantern because he thinks the DC hero would beat Deadpool in a fight. Reynolds said he didn’t know who’d win in a fight but that he chose to play Green Lantern because he thought it was a special opportunity.
However, the question still boggles the minds of comic book fans. Sure, Green Lantern has the Green Lantern Ring, but Deadpool’s mutant abilities are not to be trifled with. One fan decided to take this hypothetical fight a step further by creating this amazing piece of meme fan art depicting the fight between the two heroes, Mortal Kombat style. Who would you put your money on?
Ryan Reynolds is facing some serious accusations. According to this meme, Reynolds is being suspected of ruining a DC Comics movie only to go and make an awesome Marvel movie. But is there truth to these allegations? Well, let’s take a closer look.
Reynolds started his superhero career in Marvel movies. First, he made his superhero debut in Blade Trinity as Hannibal King back in 2004. Then five years later, Reynolds made an appearance in X-Men Origins: Wolverine as Deadpool. His transition to DC Comics came in 2011 when he ruined Green Lantern for generations of comic book fans, only to run back to Marvel five years later and film one of the best superhero movies ever. What exactly are you up to Mr. Reynolds?
3. GREEN LANTERN’S GOT A NEW GIG
Seems like Supes and Batman noticed their good pal Green Lantern hasn’t been showing up for work lately. Oops. Someone’s in big trouble. After all, these two are not the kind of people you want coming after you. Obviously, the runaway hero didn’t account for Bruce Wayne’s superior detective skills when he decided to play hooky.
You better watch out Mr. Jordan, your days of running around in a bloody red suit spouting profanities at your enemies are numbered. The world’s greatest detective and the most powerful hero on Earth are coming for you. The Justice League is in need of your services Sir, and duty comes before playing pretend. But you can always cosplay in your free time, so not everything is lost.
2. FASHION CHOICES
The Deadpool movie took quite a few stabs at Reynolds’ past as Green Lantern, however, this scene has got to be one of the best in the entire film. As he’s being taken to undergo his treatment, Wade Wilson shouts out a very specific fashion request about his future super suit. The joke was of course meant to poke fun at Reynolds’ horrible animated green suit from Green Lantern.
Of course, everyone and their mother got this reference. Not that subtlety was ever Deadpool’s forte. Naturally, the scene gained a lot of popularity among the fans and someone out there thought it would be a good idea to turn it into a meme. It’s nice to see good old Hal Jordan didn’t take Wade’s joke to heart.
1. PAST MISTAKES
Everyone has a past. We’ve all done some stuff we probably shouldn’t have. All of us made mistakes. And we all have regrets. However, it is about how you deal with those mistakes and regrets that will define you. There comes a time when you just have to forgive yourself. Otherwise, you could end up like the poor Deadpool here, or worse yet Green Lantern.
Seems like the burden of having been in the Green Lantern movie prior to starring in Deadpool was too much for Ryan Reynolds to bear and he kind of lost it. Deadpool is not a person you can reason with, so Green Lantern better have one hell of an exit strategy. In the contrary, this will not end well for him.
