CBR has contacted Grant Morrison and updated this story accordingly to include their preferred pronouns.
Grant Morrison, known for their work on Green Lantern, The Flash and The Invisibles, has come out as non-binary.
Speaking with Mondo2000.com, Morrison discussed their involvement in various projects such as Brave New World, as well as their views on broader global issues and how their work reflects them. In conversation about the power of words, Morrison said, "When I was a kid there were no words to describe certain aspects of my own experience. I've been non-binary, cross-dressing, 'gender queer' since I was 10 years old, but the available terms for what I was doing and how I felt were few and far between."
Morrison, who grew up in Glasgow in the 1960s, praised the modern evolution and expansion of language and the creation of new words, saying, "Nowadays there's this whole new vocabulary... I think it's OK to lose a few contentious words when you are creating new ones that offer a more finely-grained approach to experience."
The conversation turned more broadly to identity and the authenticity of characters within Morrison's work. When asked about writing characters such as Diana in Wonder Woman: Earth One, Morrison said that they "completely disagree[s] with the idea that we cannot understand one another," explaining that the point of stories is to communicate experience and consider how the world may look through other's eyes. They went on to say, "You do that by staying informed, listening to voices even when you disagree with them -- and by employing empathy and imagination."
Morrison joins other comic creators such as Vita Ayala (Xena: Warrior Princess, Supergirl), Neon Yang (The Tensorate Series), Ben Kahn (Gruffen: Galaxy's Most Wanted, Heavenly Blues, Once Upon a Time Machine) and Taneka Stotts (Deja Brew, Steven Universe) in coming out as non-binary. Yang has been nominated for multiple awards, including a Hugo and a Nebula. Ayala currently works for DC and is praised for the inclusion of LGBTQ+ characters in their work.
Morrison's writing career began in 1978, and they have worked for DC and Marvel both in the U.K. and America. They also co-created the Syfy series Happy! with Darick Robertson. As well as writing, they've appeared as a character in both Animal Man and Suicide Squad.
Brave New World Season 1 is available to watch on Peacock, and Morrison is currently working on Volume 3 of Wonder Woman: Earth One, which is set to be released on March 9, 2021.
