The Goldbergs creator Adam F. Goldberg recently revealed his original ending for the long-running ABC comedy series.

Per Pop Culture References, Goldberg -- whose early childhood in the 1980s formed the basis for The Goldbergs -- shared that the original ending would have also seen him make his first appearance on the hit ABC show. "I will finally answer this - I get asked [whether he will appear on the show] on a daily basis! I had an epic plan to bring back every single real person in the series for a penultimate finale, finally revealing myself on the show while also segueing into a potential new chapter of my life with my real wife I’ve been with since I was 18," revealed Goldberg. "But following my life and home videos takes lots of time/communication/effort so the new team scrapped that concept and instead wrote stories/characters that were pure fiction midway season 7."

Following the format change, Goldberg stopped being part of the show's writing team, receiving his final writing credit on the Season 7 episode, "Dave Kim's Party." With The Goldbergs embracing the fictional aspect of the series, Goldberg "focused on my new Muppet show out May 10th. Best experience of my career and a show I’m proud of!" Titled The Muppets Mayhem, the upcoming Disney+ comedy series follows Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem Band on an epic, music-filled journey to record their first-ever studio album.

The Goldbergs Series Finale Homages Back to the Future

After 10 seasons, The Goldbergs is officially going off the air with a series finale titled "Bev to the Future." The Back to the Future-themed episode will see Adam (Sean Giambrone) taking his mother, Beverly (Wendi McLendon-Covey), to her high school reunion, where he then has to make sure that she doesn't end up with the wrong man, à la Marty McFly making sure his parents George and Lorraine end up together at the Enchantment Under the Sea dance in 1955. Elsewhere in the episode, Adam's brother Barry (Troy Gentile) and his girlfriend Joanne (Beth Triffon) make a surprising decision to demonstrate how serious they are as a couple.

The Goldbergs premiered on ABC in September 2013, following a fictional version of Goldberg's family growing up in the 1980s. Besides the aforementioned actors, the comedy series stars Hayley Orrantia as Erica, a gender-swapped version of Adam's real-life brother Eric. George Segal and Jeff Garlin were also part of the show's main cast for the first eight and nine seasons as Adam's grandfather "Pops" and father Murray, respectively. Following Segal's passing and Garlin's departure from the series in 2021, both characters were killed off, with the Season 9 and 10 premieres honoring their respective characters.

The series finale of The Goldbergs airs on ABC on May 3.
