When Fox's X-Men drama The Gifted returns for Season 2 next month, it will embrace its comic book roots like never before. In the beginning of the series, we followed the struggles of the Strucker family as they ran away from the government when their two children started to exhibit mutant powers. The first season of the series was very much constructed around the Struckers' plight, as they went from place to place until they found a safe haven with the Mutant Underground -- a group of mutants who were appointed by the X-Men to be the new protectors of the species.

Over time, the cast of the Mutant Underground grew bigger, and more and more elements from the X-Men comic books started to appear. Now, as the start of Season 2 approaches, we already know that The Gifted will feature a confrontation between two different factions: the Underground, and the Inner Circle of the Hellfire Club.

The upcoming divide of the series's cast was teased in the closing moments of Season 1, and they are reinforced with the release of a new banner that features key art from The Gifted's upcoming season.

The Gifted season 2 banner

The banner shows that there will be a battle between mutants, and between family members. On the on side, there are the Reed, Caitlin and Lauren Strucker, Thunderbird, Blink and Eclipse. And, on the other, there are Polaris, a very different looking Andy Strucker, Reeva Payge and the Stepford Cuckoos. The tagline "Pick a side. Take a stand." promises an epic showdown between the two mutant groups, as both sides will fight for the future of mutantkind.

When the first Season 2 trailer of The Gifted was released during Comic-Con International in San Diego, it debuted a subtitle for the series: "Dawn of the Mutant Age." The implications of such a title are as vast as they are promising. Given that this banner reinforces the idea of a confrontation between mutant teams, the question has to be asked: will the Mutant Age be brought forth by the Underground, stepping into the light, or by the Inner Circle unleashing its destructive fires?
