After two seasons, Fox's live-action X-Men television series, The Gifted, is officially coming to an end.

The network has canceled the series over a month after the premiere of the Season 2 finale which will now serve as the final episode of the entire series.

Never an especially strong hit with viewers, Season 2 averaged less than 2 million viewers per episode, with average ratings below .6, a 40% decrease from its first season averages. That coupled with Disney's acquisition of Fox made the possibility of a renewal something of a longshot.

The series finale ended with a massive cliffhanger following the death of Reed Strucker and the surprise return of Blink, the mutant character presumed dead by her peers. With The Gifted now confirmed for cancellation, this plot point will never be resolved.
