While virtually all industries across entertainment have come to a halt, the world of video games continues to spin. Gamers remain indoors with annual gatherings such as The Game Awards canceled to encourage social-distancing. Thankfully, at least one alternative seems to have appeared on the horizon.

The Game Awards producer and host Geoff Keighley recently announced the first of a new four-month-long annual event: The Summer Game Fest, which he hopes will be a "positive, uplifting center of gravity to bring this global community together." Starting in May, the festival will see a wave of news, a number of major video game announcements and, most notably, in-game events and content downloadable and playable via Steam and Xbox.

The video game festival has been created with the help of a number of major brands across the industry, including Bethesda, Blizzard, Square Enix, WB, Steam, CD Projekt Red and many more. Come August, Keighley has revealed The Summer Game Fest will conclude with a developer showcase of sorts-- an event taking place on August 24 in partnership with Gamescom: One Night Live and iam8bit. No further details have yet been provided.

Interestingly, The Summer Game Fest has seemingly absorbed several previously announced events such as the Steam Game Festival -- scheduled to begin March 18 -- and Xbox's Inside Xbox are now a part of the upcoming summer festival.

Events will be live-streamed on multiple social media platforms, including Twitter, Facebook, Youtube and more. More details will be revealed when the Summer Game Fest schedule is posted on the official website.
