Despite doubts about how "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" would be greeted there, the Disney sequel grossed a record $52.6 million in its opening weekend in China. Deadline notes that marks the biggest Saturday/Sunday debut in Chinese box office history.

That haul helped to boost "The Force Awakens" to $1.733 billion worldwide, unseating "Jurassic World" ($1.669 billion) as the third-highest grossing film of all time.

The movie brought in $145.9 million globally over the weekend: $41.6 million in North America, where it placed in the top spot again, and $104.3 million overseas.

The No. 1 film of all time in North America, "The Force Awakens" is now the No. 7 movie of all time internationally, with $921.4 million. On the worldwide chart, it still trails behind "Titanic's" $2.187 billion and "Avatar's" $2.788 billion.
