With the receipts now counted, "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" earned $149.2 million domestically over the Christmas weekend (down slightly from Sunday projections), bringing its North American total to a whopping $540.3 million. Its global haul is now $1.09 billion.

In addition to crossing the $1 billion barrier in a record 12 days, The Hollywood Reporter notes the Disney sequel can add two more superlatives to its growing list: the largest second weekend in box office history, and the top holiday gross of all time (eclipsing the $62.3 million debut of "Sherlock Holmes").

The website states that "The Force Awakens" is "now assured" to surpass "Avatar's" $760.5 million to become the highest-grossing film of all time in North America, possibly as early as this weekend.

Already benefiting from repeat viewings, "The Force Awakens" will see little by of competition as it heads toward its Jan. 9 premiere in China.

Exit surveys reveal that while 67 percent of the audience was male for the Dec. 18-20 opening weekend, that had begun to shift by Christmas weekend, with 62 percent of viewers male.
