Eric Wallace, showrunner for The CW's The Flash, is teasing that, despite the many returning guest stars already advertised for the show's final season, the most exciting announcement is yet to come.

Speaking to ComicBook.com, Wallace revealed that this mystery special guest is set to appear in the show's final episode, and shared why he's excited about this particular character's reappearance. "I will say, in the series finale, the person who comes back, and it's not just the actor and the performer themselves, it's why they have come back," he said. "It's the most exciting thing in the world for me, because it impacts Barry's story about dealing with the past in such a big, big way. So, that's a spoiler there." Many previous stars of the show who may have fit the description of characters from Barry's past are already confirmed to be returning to the show, including Wally West (Keiynan Lonsdale), Eddie Thawne (Rick Cosnett) and Eobard Thawne (Matt Letscher).

The Flash Finale's Mystery Guest

Wallace also shared that the special guest, whose appearance will either be left as a surprise or announced closer to the air date, is someone he's wanted to bring back to the show since he started the job. "But I will say this: there is somebody who has not been announced yet who will be a surprise, or maybe we'll announce it, I don't know, but there's a character I've been waiting to come back to this show since day one I got on it, and I think we're going to be able to pull it off, so fingers crossed, in the series finale."

Wallace was promoted to showrunner beginning with Season 6, but he began on the show as a co-executive producer in Season 4, suggesting that the mystery special guest hasn't appeared since at least Season 3. They might even go all the way back to Season 1, as Wallace has previously teased that he's hoping to pay off some loose plot threads from the show's earliest episodes. "I'm looking at Season 1 and 9 as the book ends to this journey that the Flash and his team have been on for all these years. So I'm telling both now and like, get ready for a little nostalgia but also a little bit of paying off things that have been into that as early as Season 1."

Some of the biggest special guests for the final season are going to be alums from other Arrowverse shows such as Arrow's Stephen Amell and David Ramsey, Batwoman's Javicia Leslie and Supergirl's Nicole Maines. Additionally, the cast of the sister show Legends of Tomorrow -- which has seen fans campaign against its abrupt cancellation on a cliffhanger -- might make an appearance, although not to the extent of that Wallace wanted. "My original concept was to have at least one -- if not a two-parter -- that wrapped up Legends of Tomorrow," he said. However, he says he had to cut the idea when they only got 13 episodes for the season.

The final season of The Flash premieres on The CW on Feb. 8.
