The first pictures from the set of the upcoming DC Extended Universe film The Flash leaked online, revealing the first look at Michael Keaton's Bruce Wayne and Sasha Calle's Supergirl. The photos of the Last Daughter of Krypton instantly drew comparisons to another version of the character, Lara Lane-Kent, who first appeared in the Injustice: Gods Among Us: Year Three comic book series. Even the comic series' writer, Tom Taylor, noticed the similarities.

While Warner Bros. and DC have yet to confirm if this version of Supergirl is Kara Zor-El, Lara Lane-Kent or another version of the character, certain fans are already convinced she could be the DCEU's take on Lara. Nothing is set in stone, of course, but this Supergirl's costume and look isn't the only thing that could connect her to that version of the character. In fact, the character's identity could actually be tied to Zack Snyder's Justice League.

While several of DC's films are not connected to the larger DCEU, The Flash is set to be a continuation of this universe. After all, the film will not only feature the return of Ezra Miller's Scarlet Speedster, but it will also include a final appearance from Ben Affleck's Bruce Wayne. The film is set to take place after the events of Justice League, but which version of the film remains a mystery. Initially, the theatrical cut of the film, released in 2017, was reshot by Joss Whedon, and the reception was so lukewarm that it sparked a three-year demand for Snyder's version of the film. Eventually, Warner Bros. listened, and, in March 2021, Zack Snyder's Justice League was finally released, giving fans the director's original vision for the superhero ensemble film.

Zack Snyder's Justice League was considerably different from the theatrical cut and much longer. It included a lot more scenes and completely new plotlines, including one involving a member of Superman's family. Indeed, the film, and later Snyder himself, confirmed that Lois Lane was pregnant with Superman's child, and while this particular thread wasn't properly resolved in the film, it could be followed up on in The Flash.

Lara Lane-Kent appeared in the digital-first comic series Injustice: Gods Among Us: Year Three #7, which place in a dream reality where a pregnant Lois Lane had not been killed by the Joker and where she and Superman became parents to Lara. Half-human and half-Kryptonian, Lara developed superpowers, just like her father, and fought to make the world a better place, both as a superhero and as a political figure.

The character technically only existed in a dream world, but she could still serve as inspiration for the DCEU. Snyder originally intended for Superman and Lois to have a son that would eventually grow up to become the new Batman, but it's always possible that Warner Bros. planned to have Lois' pregnancy play a part in The Flash -- only in a different manner.

Lois Lane in Man of Steel

The Injustice: Gods Among Us game and comic series already served as partial inspiration for the Knightmare reality of Zack Snyder's DC films, which means there is already a connection established. Since Zack Snyder's Justice League ended with a pregnant Lois Lane, she could give birth to Lara Lane-Kent, who is destined to follow in her father's footsteps. It would explain, after all, why the character sports the same House of El crest as Superman does in the DCEU. And since The Flash is a film that will almost assuredly involve time travel in some capacity, then perhaps the Scarlet Speedster will run into Supergirl in the future -- whether in the Injustice-like Knightmare world or in another version of the timeline.

Ultimately, this all depends on the identity of Supergirl. For now, the character is shrouded in secrecy, which means fans can only theorize as to her lineage. But given the timing of the release of Zack Snyder's Justice League and Sarah Calle's casting and subsequent debut as Supergirl, it appears as if she could be the DCEU's Lara Lane-Kent.

Directed by Andy Muschietti from a script by Christina Hodson, The Flash stars Ezra Miller, Michael Keaton, Ben Affleck, Sasha Calle, Kiersey Clemons, Ron Livingston, Maribel Verdú, Saroise-Monica Jackson and Rudy Mancuso. The film arrives in theaters Nov. 4, 2022.
