The CW has revealed that the first five episode of The Flash Season 8 will consist of team-ups of the Flash and other heroes of the CW-verse in a mini "event" that will not be a traditional crossover like The CW-verse has done in the past.

The CW Chairman and CEO Mark Pedowitz revealed, "The idea for The Flash is [showrunner] Eric Wallace and [executive producer Greg Berlanti] have come together, and we're talking about other superheroes from the CW-verse that will come together in each individual episodes. It will not quite be a crossover, but it will have a crossover-type feel with the introduction of all these characters."

Pedowitz has not yet revealed which actors/characters will be appearing, although it sounds like there are some clear choices out there. He told EW, "I'll let you have those conversations with Eric Wallace. We do know that there are a couple feelers out to a couple of the actors, but we have no definitives yet."

The CW had begun a series of annual crossovers in the past, with Crisis on Infinite Earths in 2019 being its biggest one yet, but the COVID pandemic forced them to halt any widespread crossover plans due to safety regulations. Instead, The CW-verse used David Ramsey's John Diggle as a sort of walking crossover as he went from show to show.

In fact, the very nature of this upcoming event is designed to help the shows get back onto track after the pandemic threw everything out of sorts in 2020. Season 7 of The Flash won't even finish its production until June. The series usually debut in October, but if the shows finish production in June and start back up in September, there would not be enough time to finish a normal slate of eight or nine shows to hit that mid-October release, but if they do a shorter batch of episodes, it is possible to at least hit mid-November with some episodes, so The CW will now brand those five episodes as an "event." Pedowitz explained, [W]e're thrilled to have these eventize programming that we're going to do with Flash and Riverdale for those five episodes that start in mid-November."

The CW previously revealed that Riverdale will be moving to Tuesdays to be paired with The Flash in the fall.
