The Flash star Sasha Calle opened up about playing Supergirl in the film and offering Latina girls a chance to see themselves as superheroes.

Calle spoke to V magazine about a moment on the set of The Flash when director Andy Muschetti showed her a scene as Supergirl and what it meant. "Representation in the entertainment industry really matters, and I'm super honored, honestly [to be the first Latina Supergirl]," Calle said. "There was a moment when we were shooting, when Andy was like, 'Hey, come over here and watch this scene on the playback monitor.' And I go over and I see her [Supergirl], and she's in her full glory. And suddenly, I got really emotional. Because I'm looking at that, and I'm like, 'Wow, I wish I would have had this when I was little.' It meant a lot to me. I turned into child Sasha watching this person. So it's really important. And I'm really happy and really thankful to DC and Warner Bros. for doing this now. It's so cool that we're doing this, and, you know, it's about time."

Supergirl was first announced as a film in 2018, with production seeming to ramp up in 2019. At some point, however, plans for the film were scrapped and it was announced Calle would play Supergirl in The Flash. During last year's DC FanDome event, the first look at Supergirl was revealed during a teaser for The Flash, offering fans a glimpse of the hero's updated costume. And the film won't be the only chance for Calle to inspire a new generation.

In September 2021, a Supergirl series on HBO Max was announced. The series will reportedly take place before the events of The Flash, possibly offering an origin story for Calle's character. There's also a possibility of Michael Keaton's Batman appearing, as he and Supergirl are said to share a bond in The Flash that will also be key to the show's story. If the series makes it to air, it will fill the gap left by The CW's Supergirl series starring Melissa Benoist in the lead role. That series ended last November after six seasons.

Since the announcement of the series, there has yet to be an update on its status. This is especially noteworthy as the time between has seen the CEO of the newly merged Warner Bros. Discovery attempt to clean house and take DC in a different direction. The Wonder Twins movie was canceled only a few months after being announced, reportedly due to a budget deemed too high for a streaming-only release. While the same mindset might not apply to a series, the fates of many DC projects are currently up in the air as a result of the leadership change.

The Flash hits theaters June 23, 2023.
