The following contains spoilers for The Flash Season 9, airing new episodes Wednesdays on The CW.

Former The Flash star Tom Cavanagh has announced that he will be returning for the long-running superhero drama's final season.

Cavanagh recently updated his Instagram page with a post featuring the actor on two distinct beaches -- Freshwater in Australia and Locarno in Vancouver, Canada. In his caption, Cavanagh remarked how "world magic" (i.e., air travel and time zone changes) has allowed him to have a "Morning surf" in Australia and an "afternoon hang" in Vancouver within the same "Today," while noting that he has returned to Vancouver to work on The Flash. Cavanagh played Eobard Thawne/Reverse-Flash as well as multiple versions of Harrison Wells across eight seasons of The Flash, with his most recent appearance being in the Season 8 finale episode, "Negative, Part Two."

While Cavanagh's return to The Flash for its final season will likely delight fans, the actor failed to mention in what capacity he would be appearing on the show. Cavanagh has directed select episodes of the show in addition to appearing as a main cast member, with the use of a movie camera emoji in his caption suggesting that his return might be solely behind the scenes. However, a recent set photo from The Flash's series finale featured most of the show's speedster villains including the Reverse Flash, strongly suggesting that Cavanagh will be back as The Flash's arch nemesis instead of as a director.

Familiar Faces in The Flash's Final Season

Cavanagh will not be the only actor returning as the Reverse Flash for The Flash's final season, with Matt Letscher, a.k.a. the original Eobard Thawne/Reverse-Flash, also back. Also returning before The CW show finishes its final run are Rick Cosnett as CCPD Detective Eddie Thawne (and Cobalt Blue), Jessica Parker Kennedy as Nora West-Allen/XS, Keiynan Lonsdale as Wally West/Kid Flash, Sendhil Ramamurthy as Bloodwork, John Wesley Shipp as Jay Garrick/The Flash and Teddy Sears as Hunter Zolomon/Zoom. All the aforementioned names previously appeared as a main or heavily recurring cast member on The Flash.

The Flash Faces Red Death

However, Season 9 won't just feature former Flash stars, with several notable Arrowverse alums set to appear throughout the remainder of the season. Batwoman's Javicia Leslie has already appeared in Season 9, stepping into the role of Ryan Wilder/Red Death, a villainous speedster from an alternate reality that is an amalgamation of Batwoman and The Flash. She is expected to return as the Red Death in the upcoming two-parter, "The Mask of the Red Death," which will be the fourth and fifth episodes of The Flash Season 9.

Stephen Amell and David Ramsey will also be reprising their roles from Arrow as Oliver Queen/Green Arrow and John Diggle/Spartan in the upcoming ninth episode, with The Flash showrunner Eric Wallace teasing that Barry and Oliver's heartfelt reunion will be "extremely emotional." Nicole Maines will also return as Supergirl's Nia Nal/Dreamer for an episode that sees her teaming up with Iris West-Allen (Candice Patton) to solve a frightening mystery.

New episodes of The Flash Season 9 air Wednesdays on The CW.
