The Flash director Andy Muschietti recently spoiled that a version of Superman that fans have been waiting a long time to see will make a cameo in the upcoming DC Universe film.

In an interview with Esquire Middle East (via Variety), Muschietti revealed that Nic Cage appears in The Flash as Superman. "Nic was absolutely wonderful," Muschietti said. "Although the role was a cameo, he dove into it… I dreamt all my life to work with him. I hope I can work with him again soon." The director added, "He is a massive Superman fan. A comic book fanatic." Cage was originally cast to play the Kryptonian hero in Tim Burton's Superman Lives, a big-budgeted reboot of the Superman franchise, but the film was scrapped by Warner Bros. in 1998.

Cage previously opened up about Superman Lives' cancellation in March 2023, explaining how Warner Bros. didn't want Burton to direct because his previous film -- Mars Attacks -- lost the studio money. He also discussed the film's take on the Man of Steel, describing him as "more of a 1980s Superman with like, the samurai black long hair. I thought it was gonna be a really different, sort of emo Superman, but we never got there." Cage did eventually voice the Big Blue Boy Scout in the 2018 animated film, Teen Titans Go! To the Movies, with The Flash set to mark the actor's long-awaited live-action debut as the beloved DC superhero.

The Flash Explores the DC Multiverse

Cage's Superman will not be the only DC hero from Burton's past to appear in The Flash. Michael Keaton will also be returning as Bruce Wayne/Batman, reprising his role from Burton's Batman film duology -- Batman (1989) and Batman Returns (1992). In The Flash, Keaton's Caped Crusader will exist in the alternate timeline the Scarlet Speedster creates after going back in time to prevent his mother's death. Keaton's Batman return remains hotly-anticipated among fans, with many excited to see the actor don the cape and cowl again for the first time in 30 years.
