The following contains potential spoilers for The Flash Season 9, currently airing on The CW.

The Flash's Grant Gustin recently revealed that he initially pushed for the CW series to end with Barry Allen's death.

Gustin discussed his desire for Barry to go out in a blaze of glory in The Flash's ninth and final season during a fan Q&A session facilitated by TVLine. "When I thought about [The Flash] ending, there was a theory out there that Barry would sacrifice himself to keep the Speed Force alive and become the lightning bolt that inevitably struck him [in The Flash's pilot episode] and create this full circle moment, which I thought was really cool," he said. "Yeah, and I kinda always wanted him to die a hero's death in a way, and [showrunner] Eric [Wallace] was very opposed to the idea, and we really wanted to see a happy ending for Barry and Iris. And ultimately, I think that is, probably, looking back at this [season] and as fans revisit it, probably how they're going to want it to end."

While Gustin's comments seemingly rule out Barry Allen's demise in The Flash's ninth season, the superhero show's final batch of episodes effectively marks the "death" of the wider Arrowverse franchise. The Flash is the only active CW series set in mainstream Arrowverse continuity, as Superman & Lois takes place in its own, separate reality. Gustin addressed the Arrowverse's end in a recent interview, noting this wasn't something he thought about while shooting The Flash Season 9. That said, Gustin also insisted that the ninth season will deliver a fitting finale for the Arrowverse by bringing back as many legacy cast members as possible.

Arrowverse Veterans On Appearing in The Flash Season 9

One such Arrowverse veteran invited to return in The Flash Season 9 is Nicole Maines. Maines, who portrays Nia Nal/Dreamer, makes a guest appearance in the ninth season's seventh episode, "Wildest Dreams," in which she joins forces with Barry's wife, Iris West-Allen (Candice Patton). The star recently spoke about her experience reprising the Dreamer role in The Flash Season 9, insisting that it was "like riding a bicycle" after having played the character for three years in Supergirl. "While I haven't been playing [Nia], I have still been in that headspace and very in tune with her character and who she is. It was pretty easy getting back into it," Maines said.

Batwoman's Javicia Leslie also makes her Arrowverse comeback in The Flash Season 9, playing Ryan Wilder's evil alternate-timeline counterpart, Red Death. In a recent interview, Leslie described the Red Death role as "a lot of fun" to play, even though the supervillain's costume was decidedly less comfortable than her Batwoman outfit.

The Flash airs Wednesdays at 8:00 pm on The CW, with episodes available to stream the following day on the CW app.
