The Flash is set to air its series finale this week on The CW, and star Grant Gustin said he would happily play another superhero in the future following his nearly decade-long run as the titular character.

During a chat with Entertainment Weekly, Gustin said he doesn't know what the future holds, but he would not be against taking on another superhero role, even if it were related to The Flash. "I'm not going to say I'm hanging it up for good. I have no idea what the future holds," he said. "And not even Flash-related, so many people would ask what I wanted to do when this chapter was over, and how I probably wouldn't want to do superhero things again, but no, I grew up a fan of this genre. I love this genre, I love sci-fi stuff, I love superhero stuff, so I would be open to doing any superhero thing again, Flash or something else, as long as it was a character I was excited about. I would honestly love for someone to call me about some Flash-related thing at some point down the line."

Gustin took on the role of Barry Allen/The Flash during Season 2 of Arrow. The character made two appearances on the series in what was envisioned as a backdoor pilot, but the positive fan reaction led to executives developing a full fledge pilot that would take The Flash to series. The show debuted in 2014 and became an instant hit, and it also made Gustin synonymous with the titular character, something he's fully aware of. The actor said, "Regardless of whether I put this suit on again or not, and I love this, I'll be associated with the character for the rest of my life. No matter what else I do in my career, this will probably be the thing that I'm most recognized for." Gustin continued, "So anybody who wants to call me about the Flash, I will take that phone call and hear them out."

Many fans have wanted Gustin to take on the Barry Allen role in the DC Universe, a job that is currently occupied by Ezra Miller. The duo came together in 2020 when Miller crossed over from the silver screen to television in the penultimate episode of The CW's Crisis of Infinite Earths crossover event. Even though fans have pushed for Gustin to transition to the DCU, the actor has another superhero he would also like to play. Gustin said, "I know it's Marvel and not DC, but Spider-Man was always something that I loved."

Acting as a spinoff of Arrow and becoming the first of several shows that would exist within the Arrowverse on The CW, The Flash follows the costumed crime-fighter who has the ability to move at superhuman speeds. In his everyday life, he's Barry Allen, a crime scene investigator, while his Flash alter ego uses his abilities to fight superhuman villains. In addition to Gustin, the series also stars Candice Patton, Danielle Panabaker, Tom Cavanagh and Jesse L. Martin.

The series finale of The Flash airs Wednesday, May 24, at 8:00 PM ET/PT on The CW.
