Warner Bros. Television has made it official: DC Comics superhero Elongated Man will appear in The Flash season 4, and the character will be played by actor Hartley Sawyer in a recurring role.

Here's the official character description, making it clear that both his detective skills and stretching power will be on diplay in the series: "One of the Flash's most iconic allies, Ralph Dibny -- a.k.a. The Elongated Man -- is a fast-talking private investigator with investigative skills that rival those of Batman. Upon discovering he has the power to stretch his body to any shape or form, Dibny uses his new abilities to help Team Flash solve one of Central City's greatest mysteries."

The phrase "rival those of Batman" will certainly give some observers pause, but it's likely that the mention was to give those unfamiliar with Elongated Man greater context, rather than pointing to any type of Arrowverse involvement from the Dark Knight (though, feel free to speculate to whatever degree you see fit).

Sawyer has a history with The CW, as one of the stars in the recent CW Seed web series Saving the Human Race. The 32-year-old actor has also appeared on The Young and the Restless, Glory Daze and The McCarthys.

Elongated Man was created by John Broome & Carmine Infantino and first seen in 1960's The Flash #112, though he's appeared in various sectors of the DC Universe, including as a member of multiple incarnations of the Justice League. Reports of the character's potential inclusion on The Flash season 4 first surfaced earlier this month.

The Flash season 4 is scheduled to premiere on Tuesday, Oct. 10.
