Throughout 6 seasons of The Flash, we have been introduced to several memorable supporting characters that have made us love the show and have grown close to. Considering that The Flash is a DC character with decades of stories and lore that have made it unto the show. The writers and producers always throw in a character that may appear random but then we see them in the comics.
This isn't the case for all the characters, the CW has taken some creative freedom and has made up some key characters that make the story better and pertain to Barry/Flashes life in one way or another. Let's look at some classic characters you may not have known were in Flash comics and some that were completely made up for the show.
10 NEW: Joe West
As the father figure to Team Flash and literal father to Iris and Barry, Joe West was one of the few characters that the CW created for the show and has never appeared in comics until after the show premiered.
The tragic story of Barry losing his mom to Eobrard Thawne and then losing his dad to a wrongful murder charge is true in the comics, but it has never been clear as to who took care of Barry until his adulthood...It was definitely not his future wife's dad.
9 FROM THE COMICS: Linda Park
Linda Park made a brief appearance in season 2 and 3 as one of Barry's first love interest and although she may seem random, she is actually one of the most important characters in Flash mythos.
The show slightly changed her backstory but in the comics, she is actually Wally West's girlfriend and then later wife and mother to their two kids. She was a no-nonsense reporter from New York who had to ligthen up to accept Wally and eventually fall for him...way different than her live-action counterpart.
8 NEW: Cicada II
The comic Cicada is nothing like the one in the show, add in the storyline of him handing off his powers to his niece and making her a time-traveling lunatic, she's a completely new character.
Cicada in the comics is more of an acolyte and crazy old man then a meta-human hating ruthless villain so it could be debated he's a new character.
7 FROM THE COMICS: Patty Spivot
With some minor tweaks to her background, the tv show Patty and the comics book Patty are almost identical. Patty was one of Barry's girlfriends in season 2 of the show and she's just as quirky and nerdy as Barry.
In the comics, they go on to date for a brief time until Barry is forced to tell her and she breaks it off thinking she's too much of a distraction for the hero. She even becomes a speedster ar one point.
6 NEW: Harrison Wells (Any Of Them)
For a character as iconic and as important to the show as Harrison Wells, it may come as a shock he is actually a character created for the show. Harrison Wells is a bit of an amalgamation of a few Flash comic characters Darwin Elias and August Hart.
With all the things he's helped the team with and all the great other Harrison Wells we've seen, we're glad that he's a character we've gotten to know.
5 FROM THE COMICS: Captain Singh
Captain Singh is a recurring character and longtime leader of the CCPD. In both the comics and the show he's more of a background character and a mentor to Barry Allen in his civilian side.
Both Singhs are proud members of the LGBTQ+ community except the comic book version is actually married to the Pied Piper (Hartley Rathaway).
4 NEW: Nora West
To avoid confusion, XS is an actual superhero in the Flash but the mantle is donned by Jenni Ognats, Barry's granddaughter. In the show, XS is Barry's time-traveling daughter who found out she had speed and traveled back in time to meet her dad in his prime.
Although in the comic Barry does have a daughter, she is a twin named Dawn and is a much better and more experienced speedster than Nora.
3 FROM THE COMICS: Cecile Horton
Cecille Horton is the Central City DA and eventual wife to Joe in the show, possessing the meta-human ability to read minds. Her comic book counterpart is nothing like her with the only similarity is their profession.
In the comics, Cecille is a lawyer friend who knows Barry through mutual friends and she is one of the lawyers involved in prosecuting Barry after he killed Eobard Thawne.
2 NEW: Eddie Thawne
Eddie Thawne was in the first season of the show, as Iris' fiancee and partner to Joe. He meets a tragic end in the season 1 finale when he sacrifices himself to erase Eobard Thawne out of existence. He later made appearances as an apparition of the speed force and he was a beloved character killed off too soon.
Eddie, like Harrison, is more of an amalgamation of several characters including Cobalt Blue, August Hart, and Manuel Lago.
1 FROM THE COMICS: Caitlin Snow
We know Killer Frost is a well-known character, but her alter ego has changed throughout the years. In the new 52 relaunch, it was stated that Killer Frost was actually a former scientist named Caitlin Snow.
Caitlin is one of the original members of Team Flash and resident doctor who embraced her icy persona and became a hero in her own right.
