WARNING: The following contains spoilers for The Flash Season 7, Episode 17, "Heart of the Matter, Part 1," which aired Tuesday on The CW.

As The Flash Season 7 kicked into high gear, the long-running Arrowverse series featured the surprise departure of two longtime members of the main cast. Tom Cavanagh, who portrayed multiple versions of Harrison Wells and the most memorable incarnation of the villainous Reverse-Flash, and Carlos Valdes, who played Team Flash's resident tech expert Cisco Ramon, both seemingly made their last bow over the course of Season 7. But as the season reaches its climactic battle against an army of Godspeeds swarming Central City, Team Flash gets surprise reinforcements from one of its recently departed mainstays: A well-armed Cisco.

Cisco began thinking of leaving Central City for good when his longtime girlfriend Kamilla Hwang began receiving major job offers all over the country. While Cisco wasn't jealous of his friends on Team Flash, he started to notice that they were undergoing big changes in their personal lives while he was feeling relatively stagnant. Determined to continue his relationship with Kamilla and not let his own life pass him by, Cisco takes a high-level job with A.R.G.U.S. in Star City and leaves after one last adventure and a night of fun with his friends.

Given how emotional Cisco's goodbye from the team was, it appeared that it may have been sometime before he would ever resurface, but Team Flash's old friend is never one to let his buddies down in their time of greatest need. After supplying John Diggle with tech to assist the team, Cisco himself returns to Central City after Diggle is forced to step away. Now armed with the tech he designed at A.R.G.U.S., Cisco provides Team Flash enough time to escape from a brutal trap laid by Godspeed, rejoining the team back at S.T.A.R. Labs, where he settles back in to help like no time has passed at all.

Cisco's split from Team Flash and relocation to Star City was never a particularly acrimonious decision, ending on a relatively high note with his friends who wished him the best and understood why he wanted to leave. Cisco's timely return underscores, in an Arrowverse light on crossovers and guest appearances from other series' familiar faces in the wake of "Crisis on Infinite Earths," that it is still an interconnected universe. It also leaves open the door for him to return in cases when the stakes are presumably higher than ever, to further lend gravitas to whatever threat Team Flash happens to be facing at that time, now boasting an arsenal funded by A.R.G.U.S.

However, Cisco's return to Central City most certainly doesn't mean he and Kamilla will be back to weekly adventures with Team Flash, though it serves as a reminder that the Scarlet Speedster still has friends in Star City, even after the death of Oliver Queen. And with The Flash planning a wave of crossover episodes to kick off Season 8, the occasion might be one big enough to herald Cisco making a prolonged reappearance. Gone but not too far away to lend a hand, either with advanced tech or coming as the cavalry himself, Cisco Ramon will always be a staple of Team Flash.

With only one episode remaining in the season, The Flash returns Tuesday at 8 p.m. ET/PT on The CW.
