The Flash showrunner Eric Wallace teased that fans of the Fastest Man Alive's Arrowverse show may soon learn whether or not its upcoming ninth season will be its last.
While speaking to Deadline, Wallace was asked when he himself would learn if the Scarlet Speedster's TV adventures would reach the finish line with Season 9. "It's the question I get asked every five minutes," Wallace responded. "I wish I could answer it; I wish I knew. I hope I will know by the time we start shooting in the fall. I think that's a fair statement. [Laughs] So, stay tuned."
Beyond the final fate of the show, Wallace was also asked if Flash spinoffs were being considered, to which he replied in the negative. "Now, having said that, obviously…we've introduced a lot of characters over the last couple of seasons…" he added. "I would say to the audience, if you have some characters that we have introduced in the last few years that you want to see in a spinoff, you should write to The CW. But I'm going to just stay focused on The Flash right now before I start focusing on anything else."
Previously, Wallace talked about using Season 9 to resolve the cliffhanger ending of fellow Arrowverse program Legends of Tomorrow, which was canceled earlier this year after seven seasons alongside Batwoman and The CW newcomer Naomi, both which of had shorter runs. In addition to not knowing how many episodes Season 9 would have, Wallace noted, "Going to save the Legends…. As much as I'd love to do that, that's not something that is very easy to do in a season when I may have to wrap up my own story. I want to be honest, and not get anybody's hopes up!"
The Flash getting a ninth season was reported earlier this year, later being followed by the news that The CW was thinking about ending the series with a shorter season. While plot details for the season are currently confidential, the sixth issue of Earth-Prime: Hero's Twilight revealed that it will see the return of Season 6 villain Bloodwork, who broke out of prison in the comic. Additionally, though The Flash may end after Season 9, The CW CEO and chairman Mark Pedowitz said that the channel is "staying in the superhero business."
Season 9 of The Flash currently does not have a premiere date.
