Critics and Audiences Praise The Flash

As The Flash nears its theatrical release, first reactions to the film have begun to circulate, with many fans and critics referring to the film not only as DC's best film since 2008's The Dark Knight but as "one of the best superhero films of all time." CBR's own Brandan Zachary described The Flash as "as much a love letter to DC as it is about the nature of tragedy and acceptance," adding that the film will "set off SO MANY fans in the best kind of way." The film also reportedly played well with test audiences, more than any other DC Extended Universe film before it, rivaling the test screening scores for Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy.

In a 2020 interview, director Andrés Muschietti explained that The Flash would be the foundation for future movies about DC properties. Serving as a soft reboot for the new DC Universe, The Flash will lead into another upcoming DCU film, Blue Beetle, which will then lead into Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.

"This movie is a bit of a hinge in the sense that it presents a story that implies a unified universe where all the cinematic iterations that we’ve seen before are valid," Muschietti said at the time. "It’s inclusive in the sense that it is saying all that you’ve seen exists, and everything that you will see exists, in the same unified multiverse."

The Flash wrapped production in October 2021 after years of development, rewrites and ongoing controversies surrounding its lead actor. Miller has portrayed Barry Allen/The Flash in the DCEU since 2016's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. It is currently unclear how Warner Bros. Discovery will move forward with Miller after The Flash debuts in theaters.

The Flash races into theaters on June 16.
