The Expanse is on course to conclude when the hit sci-fi drama launches its sixth and final season later this year, with one of the series' star actors promising a particularly cinematic finale.

During a panel for The Expanse at New York Comic Con 2021, Amos Burton actor Wes Chatham and James Holden actor Steven Strait recently discussed the show's upcoming final season. Chatham highlighted the sixth and final episode of the season directed by series regular Breck Eisner. Breck directed the last episode, which is essentially a movie," Chatham said. "It's the longest episode that we've done, and Breck has really crushed it, knocked it out of the park."

Strait chimed in, saying, "[Eisner is] such an incredible talent. I mean like, we're really, really lucky to have had him this whole time. I mean like, truly, truly talented director." Eisner is credited with directing 14 episodes across six seasons of The Expanse, including the final season's first and last episodes. The director is no stranger to finales, though, as Eisner helmed the final episodes for both Season 4 and Season 5.

Speaking to Season 6 as a whole, Chatham and Strait expressed confidence in their work on what the actors believed was an enormous but worthy undertaking. "I think, you know, we're so excited about being here," Chatham said, "because we are so confident about Season 6, and we think [it] is, hands down, the biggest and best thing we've ever done." "For sure," Strait agreed.

Season 6 of The Expanse will adapt Babylon's Ashes, the sixth book in the space opera series by authors Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck under the pen name James S.A. Corey. There are currently eight books out, with the ninth and final installment scheduled to release later this year. The content of Babylon's Ashes will still provide a natural ending for viewers of the show, however. As such, some fans of the series have speculated a movie will cover the last three books in the series.

The Expanse provided a first look at Season 6 in a teaser trailer unveiled earlier this month along with a synopsis. Abraham, who's also a producer on the show, commented on the making of the final season during an interview in February, saying, "So we were always trying for some kind of dramatic, enjoyable ending for every season so that if we didn't get another season, the fans would feel like they got something special at the end," Abraham said. "I think we've just always been playing the game that way. So yes, this season is unusual and yes, we're aware of that, but I don't think it has changed our process much."

The Expanse Season 6 will premiere Dec. 10 on Amazon Prime Video.
