Amazon is reportedly nearing the final stages of a deal that will bring The Expanse to the streaming giant’s catalog for a fourth season, effectively reviving the sci-fi show after it was canceled by the Syfy network last week.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, a source close to the matter claims that Amazon Studios is very close to closing the deal, though nothing has been finalized. Amazon has yet to comment on the status of the deal.
Since news of The Expanse’s cancellation at Syfy was revealed last week, fans have been planning a series of increasingly eye-catching stunts to try and bargain for its renewal. Last week, an airplane bearing a message pleading for the series’ renewal was flown over Amazon Studios after news broke that the company was considering picking up the show. More recently, a GoFundMe campaign was launched to send a replica of one of the series’ iconic ships, the Rocinante, into space. The goal of $4,000 was met handily in five hours.
The Expanse is based on the sci-fi novel series of the same name by James S. A. Corey, which is actually the pen name of authors Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck. The series follows the adventures of an ensemble cast in the deep future, all with diverse backgrounds that include various cultures and factions from Earth, Mars and the asteroid belt. When an alien protomolecule enters the fray, the tentative peace between the three factions is tested (and further put at risk by corporate interests).
