The Expanse showrunner Naren Shankar discussed the tense reunion that will be explored during the show's upcoming Season 5 between Naomi and her son Filip, promising how things won't exactly be smooth sailing for the characters.

When asked about the fallout between Naomi and Belter terrorist/freedom fighter Marco Inaros concerning their son, Shankar deferred to Naomi's transmission to Fred Johnson during Season 4, speculating that she was calling in for Johnson to repay the favor he owed her. "Well, I think at the end of season 4, the message she sent to Fred Johnson was, 'I need to get in contact with my son. I'm calling in that favor that we set up way back in season 1,'" Shankar told EW. "'I'm calling in that favor. I really need to find my son, because I'm afraid that his father is going to get him killed.'"

"It's that she understands, or she's seeing that Marco is on the rise, and she knows the kind of person that he is," Shankar continued. "After years of feeling like, 'I can't reconnect. I abandoned him. I left my kid,' she's determined to reach out to him, and try to save him from somebody that she thinks is really a terrible person." Teasing the dramatic stakes of their reunion, Shankar divulged how, ultimately, "the reunion that she is hoping for is probably not the one that she's going to get."

Season five of the series picks up as multitudes of humans leave the solar system in search of new homes and vast fortunes on the earth-like worlds beyond the alien Ring, and a heavy price for centuries of exploitation of the Belt finally comes due and a reckoning is at hand.

An adaptation of the novel series of the same name by James S.A. Corey, The Expanse stars Steven Strait, Cas Anvar, Dominique Tipper, Wes Chatham, Shohreh Aghdashloo and Frankie Adams. Season 5 premieres Dec. 16 on Amazon Prime Video.
