The cast of The Expanse knew they had a dedicated, passionate fan base. But it wasn't until the show was cancelled by Syfy following its third season that they realized just how dedicated and passionate those fans are. The fandom formed the #SaveTheExpanse" movement and their work to bring attention to the show was undoubtedly part of the reason it was soon picked up by Amazon Prime for an additional two seasons.

On a visit to The Expanse set in Toronto, several cast members mentioned how amazed and moved they were by the outpouring of fan support.

In fact, the fans were so visible and vocal that it was one of the reasons new cast member Burn Gorman, who takes on the role of the morally grey Murtry in Season 4, decided to join the series. “It felt very nice to be joining something with a sense of momentum and a really interested, involved fan base," Gorman said.

"I’ve had a few opportunities to meet the #SaveTheExpanse team [at] New York Comic-Con or whatever, and what is very apparent is the joy in, ‘Let’s f*cking do this, let’s do as much as we can [to save the show].’ Even though really it’s about executives making decisions and it’s about money, etc., it felt very involved in a very passionate way."

Meanwhile, the cast members who had been involved in The Expanse since its first season were excited to see the fandom get behind a show they loved and believed in. “We had this incredible up surge of this fan support, which was so moving," noted Steven Strait, who stars as Jim Holden. "They rented a plane and they flew it around Amazon’s headquarters with a 'Save The Expanse' banner for a day. And they put a model of the Roci into space and tweeted it at Amazon. And they filled executive’s offices full of Roci coffee.… It was just so amazing and gratifying.

"I think as an actor, the greatest thing you can ever feel is the passion you have for a project reflected back at you," Strait continued, "and we felt that across the board."

Shohreh Aghdashloo, who's played public servant Crisjen Avasarala since the show's first episode, was still ecstatic when she discussed the fandom's support of the series. "I have never, ever seen the impact of fans on a show like this before in my life, and I’ve worked 40 years," she observed. "It was interesting. We all knew the show was cancelled. And then I receive a text message with a picture of a balloon carrying a message, 'Save The Expanse.' I wrote, ‘We’re not doing this. Who’s doing this?’ So I called and they said, ‘Fans. They got together, they put pennies and dollars together, sent a balloon up.’ I could not believe it! And a minute later I hear it’s been picked up by Amazon.

“So it was incredible to be honest with you," Aghdashloo added. "...It tells me that the fans of this show are for real and they really mean it. It’s not like today they like this show, another day they like another show. They’re really with us and they really know what is going on. That’s why they wanted this story to be told ‘til the end."

An adaption of the novel series of the same name by James S.A. Corey, The Expanse stars Steven Strait, Cas Anvar, Dominique Tipper, Wes Chatham, Shohreh Aghdashloo and Frankie Adams. Season 4 arrives Dec. 13 on Amazon Prime.
