Endings to shows can be bittersweet, which is why The Expanse aims to deliver a heartfelt thanks to its many supportive fans when the hit sci-fi series wraps up its upcoming sixth and final season later this year.

While speaking at a panel during New York Comic Con 2021, actors Wes Chatham and Steven Strait -- who play Amos Burton and James Holden, respectively -- discussed what they hope Season 6 of The Expanse will mean to fans. "Season 6 is basically a love letter to all of you because it's the biggest and best thing that we have done to this point," Chatham said, "and we are so excited to be able to share it with you guys and cap off the relationship that we've had together."

Strait also expressed his appreciation for the support the show has received from fans over its six-year run. "We wouldn't have been able to finish this story without you [the fans]," Strait said. "We are so deeply grateful for all of you, I mean, you allowed us to finish this story, and that has meant the world to me and us and just thank you, thank you very much."

When it comes to The Expanse, fans' support goes beyond viewership. The show was canceled by SYFY back in 2018 after three seasons, before the series' vocal fandom expressed their support for its continuation through the #SaveTheExpanse movement. Within a month, The Expanse was acquired by Amazon Studios for a fourth season on the Amazon Prime Video streaming service, with the fifth season having been completed earlier this year. More recently, fans were provided with a glimpse into Season 6 when a teaser trailer along with a synopsis for the upcoming season was unveiled earlier this month.

Based on the series of novels from writers Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck under the pen name James S.A. Corey, Season 6 of The Expanse will adapt Babylon's Ashes, the sixth entry in the planned nine-book series. Although there is still more story to be told after Season 6, Abraham, who is also a producer on the series, promised during an interview back in February, "[Season 6] pays off the story that we began in episode one of Season 1 where the Martians, the Earthers and the Belters were all in this incredibly uneasy and unstable political system with the Belters absolutely being at the foot of that table and everybody fighting for their place in the solar system."

Season 6 of The Expanse premieres Dec. 10 on Amazon Prime Video.
