PlayStation's original God of War trilogy pit Kratos against the Greek pantheon, caught in machinations of the Olympian gods. The newer instalments of the franchise bring the demigod toe-to-toe against Norse gods. It also introduced his son Atreus and allows players to step into the boots of an older Kratos, no longer bent on destruction and instead on a path of redemption.

The next entry in the franchise is God of War Ragnarök, which picks up after the events of 2018's God of War. Kratos and his son Atreus will journey through several worlds to prevent the titular end of days. The game is set to feature both new and returning characters as the gameplay trailer revealed. These include familiar faces such as Brok, Sindri and Mimir. The game will introduce Angrboda, who is set to play an important role in the narrative.

This is one of several video game-based projects in development for Prime Video, with the others being a Fallout series and a live-action adaptation of Mass Effect. Since these projects were announced, there have been no updates concerning their progress. The reception of these projects have varied, with some, including former lead writer on Mass Effect, David Gaider, who stated, "The possibility... makes me cringe just a little, unlike many fans who appear... excited?"
