Tomb Raider star Angelina Jolie is currently set to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe for Chloe Zhao's The Eternals, though it wasn't made clear at that time who she would be playing. However, a new report indicates that she'll play the Eternal known as Sersi.
In its post revealing that Big Sick star Kumail Nanjiani was looking at a role in the film, The Hollywood Reporter wrote, "Jolie is understood to be playing the character named Sersi, a more outgoing Eternal who has not been afraid to move amongst humankind."
Created by Jack Kirby in 1976, The Eternals are a group of super-beings made by the space gods known as Celestials. In the 2000s, acclaimed author Neil Gaiman and artist John Romita, Jr. helmed the series. Sersi first appeared in Marvel comics in Jack Kirby’s Strange Tales #109, which released in 1963. She went on to make her first appearance in The Eternals in 1976.
Sersi is a super-being with the psionic ability to change the molecular structure of almost any object. She also possesses a super intellect, super strength, cosmic energy projection and immortality. While most of the Eternals have similar powers, Sersi is said to be one of the strongest.
Directed by Chloé Zhao with a screenplay by Matthew and Ryan Firpo, The Eternals is expected to be released in theaters in 2020.
