Relative newcomer Tom Taylor has been cast in the pivotal role of Jake Chambers in the ambitious adaptation of Stephen King's "The Dark Tower."

Variety reports the young actor, whose only credits are "Doctor Foster," "The Last Kingdom" and "Legends," scored the role after a worldwide search for the role of Roland Deschain’s protege.

Idris Elba will star as Roland Deschain, aka the Gunslinger, with Matthew McConaughey playing the villainous sorcerer the Man in Black. They're joined by “Mad Max: Fury Road” actress Abbey Lee as Tirana.

King clarified earlier this month that film won't adapt his 1982 novel "The Gunslinger," the first novel in his "Dark Tower" series, but rather will start "in media res, in the middle of the story instead of at the beginning." The adaptation, backed by Sony Pictures and Sony Pictures and Media Rights, calls for a movie trilogy, with interlocking television miniseries.

Director Nikolaj Arcel wrote the screenplay with Anders Thomas Jensen, Akiva Goldsman and Jeff Pinkner. Goldsman will produce, alongside Imagine Entertainment’s Brian Grazer, Ron Howard and Erica Huggins.

The first "Dark Tower" is set to premiere Feb. 17, 2017.
