Warning: The following contains Tales from the Dark Multiverse: Teen Titans The Judas Contract #1 by Kyle Higgins, Mat Groom, Tom Raney, Hi-Fi, Tom Orzechowski

The betrayal and death of Terra is one of the most important stories in the history of the Teen Titans, standing as one of the most serious losses the group has ever suffered. Although other versions of the character appeared over the years, the memory of what happened to her has always hung over the Titans. But things could have been very different - and far, far worse.

The newest Tales From The Multiverse revealed what would have happened if Terra hadn't died and instead went full evil - becoming capable of destroying an entire world on her own.

TRAITOR IN THE TITANS

New Teen Titans: Judast Contract

Tara was the illegitimate daughter of the Markovian King, making her the half-sister to Geo-Force. Like her brother, she had powers tied to the Earth itself, allowing her to control and manipulate any and all forms of ground. Exiled from Markovia, her belief that super-powered beings should rule the world only festered and grew. She became an assassin, working with Deathstroke and even forming a relationship with him. The Terminator brought Terra into his plans to bring down the Teen Titans, using her as a spy while tricking the team into recruiting her.

She was able to work with Deathstroke to capture the team for the H.I.V.E. A misunderstanding on Terra's part, however, eventually led her to believe Deathstroke had turned on her, causing her to lash out even more violently. This ultimately brought down the H.I.V.E. base on top of her. Her attempts to kill the Titans directly lead to her own death, as she didn't make it out of the scuffle. Now, all these years later, it turns out that the Dark Multiverse is home to one world where Terra didn't die in that confrontation- and the world suffered for it.

THE JUDAS CONTRACT

The deviation within the Dark Multiverse comes as the Teen Titans are preparing to say goodbye to two founding members - Robin and Kid Flash. Before Dick Grayson leaves the Tower, however, he ends up speaking with Terra. He gives her what he believes to be an inspirational speech about deciding your own identity. But the secretly villainous Terra takes a different lesson from his story: that you have to craft your own destiny, outside of your mentors. When Terra next sees her benefactor Deathstroke, she stands up for herself in a way she never did in the core DC Universe. Slade tries to slap her back into submission, but a newly invigorated Terra attacks and ultimately kills him with her powers. Threatening to hunt down the rest of the Wilson family and kill them if he refuses to help, Terra forces Wintergreen to give her the chemical upgrade that had originally enhanced Slade enough for him to stand toe-to-toe with super-powered foes.

Things immediately get worse, especially for the Teen Titans. Without Slade's insistence that they bring in the Titans alive, Terra lashes out with more lethal force and takes on a new identity as Gaia. She murders Raven and seriously wounds Beast Boy when she destroys the Titans Tower by forcing a volcano to erupt out of it. She then buries Starfire her under an avalanche of rock, kills Cyborg by battering him until his robotic body is left in pieces and hurls Wonder Girl into space embedded in stone. With all that going on, Kid Flash is able to save Dick and give him a Robin costume. This allows the pair to stall Gaia long enough for reinforcements to arrive, although both of them are killed in the battle. But even when the big guns show up, it's not enough to save the day.

TERRA VS. THE WORLD

Superman, the most powerful hero on the planet, is the one to confront Gaia. But her enhanced powers allow her to bring down an entire city around her and the Man of Steel. Even when the hero is able to briefly stop her, she uses her powers to summon all the kryptonite on the planet, trapping Superman in a hail of the poisonous stones. Using her powers, Terra is even able to destabilize the core of the planet. This will wipe out most of humanity, which begins in earnest across the planet. The ones that do survive won't even be able to target Gaia without killing themselves, as she needs to live long enough to hold the world together. She kills Superman and Changling (the last of the Teen Titans, who confronts her over her actions) before completing her plan, becoming the ruler of this ruined world.

The issue seems to confirm the overwhelming power Terra could possess if she ever fully tapped into it. If she's creative, she even has the power to bring down major heroes like Superman or keep pace with a speedster like Kid Flash. On top of bringing down an entire superhero team on her own, she just became one of the most brutal warlords yet introduced within the Dark Multiverse. Whatever heroes remain can't even try to take revenge without destroying the world around them in the process. While "Judas Contract" is a foundational tragedy for a certain corner of the DC, it at least only ended in the demise of one mentally unstable teenager instead of the entire world around her.

Tales from the Dark Multiverse: The Judas Contract #1 is on sale now.
