THE DARK KNIGHT RISES
According to Showbiz 411’s Twitter feed, Matthew Modine’s Nixon is a “politician and a key villain” in the film. Interesting. Want to bet all the names announced so far are code names? Besides Regan in “The Dark Knight Returns” and Lex Luthor in “Superman/Batman,” has Batman really tussled with politics?
Release date: July 20th, 2012
X-MEN: FIRST CLASS
Director Matthew Vaughn tells CBR that the key to making the film was mixing the X-Men with the aesthetic of 1960s cinema. “We looked at the ’60s [X-Men] comics and I loved all the old ’60s and ’70s movies growing up. So I was very comfortable about creating the look that I wanted. It wasn’t that hard.” In fact, the biggest hurdle, he explained, was avoiding “Austin Powers” style camp.

The Wrap reports that Jeff Bridges has been cast as Ryan Reynolds’s partner in the film. We first heard Bridges might join up about a month ago and back then I said it would elevate the film because The Dude brings class to any project he gets involved in. So I guess it’s really happening now.

Starring Ryan Reynolds, release date: June 17th, 2011
We’ve had actor short lists around here from time to time, but now they happen for directors? Spinoff Online reports that such a list exists for “The Wolverine” and it includes names like Antoine Fuqua (“Training Day”), Doug Liman (“The Bourne Identity”), and James Mangold (“3:10 to Yuma”). Out of the list, I think I’d prefer Mangold. He can give the dramatic scenes heft and stage some good fights.
Release date: 2012?
COWBOYS & ALIENS
Continuing the theme of interesting movie endorsements, the film will sponsor multiple vehicles in several NASCAR races over twenty weeks according to Latino Review. “The promotional vehicle will be kicked off at Top Gear 300 at Charlotte Motor Speedway on May 28. The number 1 ‘Cowboys & Aliens’ Chevrolet Impala will be driven by NASCAR driver Mike Wallace,” they write. Here’s concept art for the Impala:
Remember when “Impala” was a punchline along with “Pinto” and “AMC Gremlin?”
Starring Daniel Craig, release date: July 29th, 2011
Matthew Vaughn updates Slashfilm on the sequel’s prospects. “We might do it. People forget that ‘Kick Ass’ we made for $28 million and now with DVD and everything else has made $225 million in revenue so it’s done great business,” says the always blunt director. “My theory is I don’t know how to make sure ‘Kick Ass 2’ is as good as ‘Kick Ass 1.’ I enjoyed making the movie so much and I loved working with all the characters in it so who knows? There could be one but if I do a sequel to that it’s gotta be just as good, if not better.”
Release date: TBA
The second season of the series is coming to Blu-ray in July according to this press release on CBR. In addition to all the season’s episodes and a new deleted scene Easter Egg, the set comes with an “in-depth exploration of the alternate reality concept, the use of this physical theory in the DC Comics Universe and the alternate Earth created in the fan-favorite Justice League episode ‘A Better World.'”
On DVD: July 26th, 2011
ON AN EPISODE LONG, LONG AGO
In the following clip, George Lucas tells G4 that he has “50 hours” of a “Star Wars” TV show developed:
He needs to figure out “a different technology” to make a TV show? It’s a good thing there’s 70 years of television know-how to draw upon. I suppose the easiest thing is redressing sets, which shouldn’t be too tough considering the Imperial aesthetic. You can also limit the set extensions and CGI creatures. On TV, Sci-Fi fans like actors in masks and bumpy forehead make-up. I wonder what his “50 hour” storyline actually is and how difficult it would be to produce using typical budgetary limits. “Babylon 5” delivered a pretty good story on a shoe-string. Knowing what (little) I know about Lucas, he’ll have to feel that he discovered all these techniques himself. Meanwhile, if any of you in the great, wide Internet discover something awesome, disheartening, or just plain weird, let us know! Take credit, come up with a clever nickname, or go anonymous. The choice is yours. Fresh rumors and movie news every weekday morning. I am Erik Amaya, bracing for the future threat of a “Star Wars” Season 5.
