The Dark Knight Rises Goes Viral With Mysterious CIA Documents

Tis the season. No, not for holiday cheer and gift giving, but for Warner Bros. to kick off the viral campaign for The Dark Knight Returns, the conclusion of Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy. With filming wrapped, it’s time to start combing the Internet for clues as to what exactly will unfold when the film premieres on July 20.

Wired’s Underwire blog got the first piece of information last night with a mysterious fake CIA bulletin about Russian nuclear physicist Leonid Pavel looking for asylum in the United States. Commenters quickly guessed that the photo is actually that of actor Alon Abotabul, whom we knew was in the movie, even if we didn’t know much about the role. The document gives a few hints, including this line: “Given Dr. Pavel’s expertise on nuclear fuel cycle technology and reactor designs, there is concern that various militants in the region could be responsible for his disappearance.”

Speaking of militias, Empire Online scored its own exclusive document, this time a mostly blacked-out communication transcript between an undisclosed CIA station chief and a militia member that vaguely explains why Pavel is on the run.

Neither document gives an abundance of information, although we’re guessing there’s a lot more in there than a simple read-through can reveal.

The Dark Knight Rises stars Christian Bale as Batman, Anne Hathaway as Selina Kyle, Tom Hardy as Bane, Marion Cotillard as Miranda Tale, Joseph Gordon-Levitt as John Blake, Michael Caine as Alfred, Gary Oldman as Commissioner Gordon and Morgan Freeman as Lucius Fox.
