After much debate and rumor, a DCTV show is finally crossing over with another CW property. The heroes of DC's Legends of Tomorrow are heading over to the Supernatural set -- well, sort of.

The upcoming episode titled "Zari, Not Zari" will have Constantine and friends looking for another piece of the Loom of Fate in British Columbia. The gang will encounter Baby, the Winchester's beloved 1967 Chevy Impala, during a spooky stroll through woods. However, fans should temper their expectations a little bit because Sam and Dean Winchester won't be appearing in the crossover.

"The [Supernatural] producers were incredibly gracious and enthusiastic about this tip of the hat, however," told Legends showrunner Phil Klemmer to Entertainment Weekly. "They even let us borrow some of their musical score--listen closely! Sam and Dean did not make the final cut, unfortunately. Or rather they were busy working on their own show."

Supernatural is a television show within the Arrowverse, and the characters are fictional. The Legends are doing a quasi-crossover with the production rather than the cast of Supernatural itself. While we sadly won't see the Winchesters interacting with the Legends, there'll be a lot of meta-references and easter eggs sprinkled throughout the episode.

A potential crossover between the Arrowverse and Supernatural, two of CW's zaniest properties seems like a foregone conclusion. The two universes share a lot in common, and speculation of a crossover between the two has been rampant for years. Arrow actor Stephen Amill even had to quash rumors that Jensen Ackles was going to show up as Batman in the Arrowverse.

This crossover was years in the making, and originally, the Winchester brothers were going to be the ones visiting the set of another DCTV show property. Jackson Stewart, a former production assistant on Supernatural, recalled there were once discussions of a potential crossover between Smallville and Supernatural.

"There was a lot of really cool ideas that some of the writers had," Stewart told Entertainment Weekly. "They had an episode where they really wanted to do a Superman curse that was about every actor who plays Superman ends up getting killed. So they find out that Tom Welling from 'Smallville' is next and have to save him. I thought that was one of the funniest ideas that I’d heard."

An episode featuring Sam and Dean interacting with actor Tom Welling isn't the strangest idea; Supernatural has done a lot of weird episodes and crossovers. Sam and Dean have visited an alternate reality where their lives are a fictional tv show, attended fan convention based on their adventures and met Scooby-Doo. An episode featuring the pair interacting with Superman would totally be up the show's alley, but, sadly, the episode never materialized.

With Supernatural in its 15th and final season, now they're implementing this long-forgotten idea but in the reverse. DC's Legends of Tomorrow is the perfect vehicle to meta-textualize and serve as a love letter to this beloved long-running series. Legends has made many fourth-wall-breaking jokes and references to other shows throughout its tenure. The show even made a joke about their characters' inability to show up in the annual network crossover.

The Arrowverse owes a lot of its success to Supernatural making CW a home for fantasy and genre shows out there on television. Supernatural may be ending, but that creative spirit to throw things at the wall and see where it sticks is alive and well. And a proper crossover between the two will happen in some form or another.

"Zari, Not Zari" was originally scheduled to air on March 24 but has been pushed to April 7, as production of the Arrowverse shows been halted due to the outbreak of coronavirus (COVID-19).

DC’s Legends of Tomorrow stars Caity Lotz, Dominic Purcell, Brandon Routh, Nick Zano, Maisie Richardson-Sellers, Tala Ashe, Matt Ryan, Jes Macallan, and Courtney Ford.
