Although the producer of Battle Royale admitted seven months ago that Lionsgate’s The Hunger Games had killed any chances for the planned U.S. remake, there’s now word an adaptation may find new life — on television.
The Los Angeles Times reports The CW has begun talks to develop Koushun Takami’s 1999 novel as an hourlong drama about schoolchildren forced to fight each other to the death. Negotiations are in the early stage, and any agreement would hing on the author’s approval.
The network already has one somewhat similarly themed project in development: The Selection, dubbed “The Hunger Games meets The Bachelor,” in which girls from different castes compete in a dystopian future to win a prince. A pilot was shot, but the project has been put back into development.
Author Suzanne Collins’ Hunger Games trilogy has been repeatedly criticized as a ripoff of Battle Royale, which has already been adapted in Japan as a live-action film (with a sequel) and a popular manga series.
