The CW revealed the air date for Legacies' final episode, bringing The Originals spinoff to a close after four seasons.
Following the show's somewhat controversial cancelation, The CW announced that the popular fantasy drama Legacies' final episode will air on June 16. The conclusion of Legacies closes out a multi-show spanning shared universe that began with The Vampire Diaries, which ran for eight seasons, followed by five seasons of The Originals. Legacies is one of several DC adaptations to get the ax this season, including Batwoman and Legends of Tomorrow. Although Legacies was not strictly a direct DC creation, the show is a spinoff from The Vampires Diaries, which did receive a DC comic book adaptation.
Legacies creator, Julie Plec, described the series of cancelations as a type of "Red Wedding," harkening back to the now-infamous scene in Game of Thrones. "It’s the Red Wedding at WBTV/CW today," Plec said on Twitter following news of the cancelations. "Much more to say, but not today. Loads of gratitude coming for fans and cast and crew in future tweets. But today, we mourn." A show Plec executive produced, Roswell, New Mexico, recently got canceled ahead of its fourth season premiere.
News of the canceling came as WarnerMedia and ViacomCBS announced its intentions to sell The CW. Subsequent reports suggested the sale would negatively impact The CW's original programming, with the possibility of new ownership leading to much of its current lineup getting canceled. The CW chairman and CEO Mark Pedowitz recently assured fans that, although The CW had canceled a number of shows, including many Superhero ones such as DC's Legends of Tomorrow, the company plans to remain in the DC universe.
"[We're] staying in the superhero business," the network chairman said. "We are staying working with Greg Berlanti, who has masterminded creatively The CW DC Universe." The chairman did go on to acknowledge that circumstances meant it had cut back much of its content in recent months. "So we're not as robust as we were in the past, but still very much there. We started with one -- this was Arrow 10 years ago -- we have now moved to create a whole bunch of superheroes. And we're proud of it and we plan to stay in that business," he said.
Legacies will air its final episode on June 16.
