Thanks to The CW's new and highly-lucrative acquisition by Nexstar, the chances of Superman and Lois or The Winchesters landing a renewal at the network look increasingly bleak.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, The CW expects to have just three U.S. scripted original series next season. This includes the recently renewed series, All American. The current plans do not bode well for shows including Superman and Lois and The Winchesters, whose futures have been uncertain.

The Winchesters and Superman & Lois Air a While Longer

After Nexstar Media Group finalized its purchase of The CW last October, executives confirmed the network would show less DC programming when the 2023-24 season arrived. Superman & Lois, which is based on the titular DC Comics characters, premiered in February 2021. Featuring Tyler Hoechlin and Elizabeth Tulloch as Clark Kent/Superman and Lois Lane respectively, Superman & Lois renewed for a third season last March. Season 3 plans have not been affected by Nexstar's takeover, and reports suggest DC Studios co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran may have a future for the show beyond the season.

Meanwhile, creators of The Winchesters, which premiered on The CW last October, admitted uncertainty about whether there will be a Season 2 of the dark fantasy drama. Showrunner Robbie Thompson conceded the raft of changes at The CW leave its future in doubt, though everyone involved with the show will continue to put out the best product possible. A prequel series to Supernatural, The Winchesters became The CW's most-watched debut series since Naomi, with the premiere drawing 757,000 viewers. The show features Jensen Ackles, who also is an executive producer of the show, as well as Meg Donnelly, Drake Rodger and Smallville star Tom Welling.

The Winchesters returned to screens on Jan. 24 following a mid-season break, airing its latest episode, "Hang on to Your Life." The show moved to a new time after airing the first half of Season 1 at an earlier slot. Meanwhile, Superman & Lois will premiere Season 3 this March as Michael Bishop, Alex Garfin, Inde Navarette and Erik Valdez return as main cast members alongside Hoechlin and Tulloch.

The Season 3 debut of Superman & Lois airs on Mar. 14 at 8 p.m. ET while fans can watch weekly episodes of The Winchesters each Tuesday at 9 p.m. ET.
