The CW's Supergirl and Black Lightning series might be ending in 2021, but the network is already hard at work developing new live-action DC superhero TV shows. Up first is Superman and Lois, a series that will see Tyler Hoechlin and Elizabeth Tulloch reprise their roles as Clark Kent and Lois Lane when it premieres next February. In addition, The CW is also developing the newly-announced Naomi series, which is set to focus on one of DC Comics' newest heroes.

Filmmaker Ava DuVernay (Selma) and Arrow writer and executive producer Jill Blankenship are developing Naomi based on the comic book property of the same name, which was created by writers Brian Michael Bendis and David F. Walker and artist Jamal Campbell in March 2019. The Naomi character, whose regular human name is Naomi McDuffie, is a young woman who can transform into a super-powered individual with enhanced strength and endurance, as well as the ability to fly, levitate and generate energy waves around her body.

Similar to Superman, Naomi was adopted at a young age by a pair of step-parents in the forms of Greg and Jen McDuffie and raised as an ordinary person in the small town of Port Oswego, Oregon. Before that, she was born on an alternative version of Earth where the planet's ozone layer had been destroyed by humans, allowing mysterious radiation to leak onto the surface. This radiation caused 29 random people around the world to develop super-human abilities and led to a deadly war between those who sought to use their powers to rule the planet and those who opposed them.

In the end, all but eight of these beings were either killed or left Earth in response to the violence and destruction caused by the others. The remaining eight "gifted" individuals were able to maintain a truce until one of them, Naomi's mother, became the only one capable of giving birth. This made Naomi a target for Zumbado, a murderous super-powered being who had succeeded in conquering half the planet and was obsessed with proving his superiority over the others. Desperate to protect her, Naomi's parents handed her over to their allies, who eventually brought her to the Prime Universe.

In The CW's adaptation, Naomi will set out to uncover the truth about her past and the multiverse after "a supernatural event shakes her hometown to the core." The titular character also has a key relationship with Superman in DC Comics Universe, eventually journeying to Metropolis to meet him, in the hopes that he will become her mentor and assist her in uncovering the mysterious origins of her super-powers. With Hoechlin's Man of Steel set to become a larger part of the Arrowverse moving forward, it seems the stage has already been set for a future crossover between that show and DuVernay's new series.

With the Arrowverse in a state of transition following the cancelations of Black Lightning and Supergirl and the exit of Ruby Rose from Batwoman, the universe will be looking to its newest recruits, including Naomi, to shoulder the load as the old guard end their historic run on The CW.
