The CW has picked up the pilot for The Secret Circle, based on the popular series of fantasy romance novels by The Vampire Diaries author L.J. Smith.
The hour-long drama, from Alloy Entertainment (Gossip Girl, The Vampire Diaries), Warner Bros. Television and CBS Television Studios, is written and executive produced by Andrew Miller and The Vampire Diaries showrunner Kevin Williamson, who only recently joined the project.
Williamson initially had planned to develop a potential companion series to The Vampire Diaries for The CW, but he told network executives that his busy schedule hadn’t allowed him to focus on the project, which reportedly centers on a group that investigates paranormal occurrences.
Debuting in 1992, Smith’s Secret Circle trilogy revolves around Cassy, a shy 16-year-old who moves to a new town, only to discover that she’s a witch and part of a secret coven — as well as the key that will unlock a centuries-old battle between good and evil.
