Stephen Amell, fresh from stints on “Hung” and “The Vampire Diaries,” has been cast as wealthy bad boy turned vigilante Oliver Queen in The CW’s “Arrow” pilot, Deadline reports.
The network ordered the superhero pilot, based on DC Comics’ Green Arrow, just two weeks ago from Warner Bros. Television, “Green Lantern” screenwriters Greg Berlanti and Marc Guggenheim and “Fringe” co-executive producer Andrew Kreisberg. David Nutter (“The Pacific,” “Game of Thrones”), who helmed the pilots of “Smallville” and “Supernatural,” will direct.
Although there isn’t a lot known about “Arrow,” a leaked casting breakdown indicates the drama will include elements somewhat familiar to comics fans, including a crusading legal aid attorney named Dinah “Laurel” Lance and Oliver’s best friend turned chief rival Tommy Merlyn.
The 30-year-old Amell, whose credits also include ABC’s “Private Practice” and The CW’s “90201,” had a prominent role on the third and final season of HBO’s “Hung,” playing a rival prostitute to Thomas Jane’s character. He reportedly was also a finalist to replace Andy Whitfield on Starz’s “Spartacus.”
