ABC began development of The Conners following the cancellation of Roseanne in May following Roseanne Barr’s racist tweet attacking Valerie Jarrett, a former adviser to President Obama. Amid mounting criticism, Barr apologized and pledged to leave Twitter, but didn’t. She has repeatedly claimed she was unaware that Jarrett is African-American. The spinoff features all of the stars of the Roseanne revival, except for Barr, who doesn’t benefit financially from the new series.

Barr's namesake character was killed off screen in the first episode of the revival from an opioid addiction. The actor, who previously said she wouldn't watch The Conners, has blasted the choice to kill her character in that way.
