We continue our tour through the alphabet, with a different cool comic book item each day, from A to Z!
Today we look at a cool non-DC/non-Marvel horror comic book!
Oops, how did that get there?
In any event, we first meet the Crypt Keeper in the pages of EC’s crime comic, Crime Patrol…
They then turned the book into The Crypt of Terror…
It finally became the title it is most famously known as (and how it gets placed under “T”), Tales from the Crypt…
The book had a stunning mass of talent, with Al Feldstein handling the writing chores.
The art, though, wow, the ART!
Johnny Craig, Wally Wood, Jack Davis, Feldstein himself, Davis, George Evans, Jack Kamen, Graham Ingels, Harvey Kurtzman, Al Williamson, Joe Orlando, Reed Crandall, Bernard Krigstein, Will Elder, Fred Peters and Howard Larsen!!!
The covers were done by Jack Davis most of the series – WOW, he was good!
Sadly, due to the Senate Subcommittee on Juvenile Delinquency and the ensuing Comics Code of America, the book was doomed.
It ended with issue #46.
But what a run it was while it lasted!
A whole new generation of fans got to appreciate Feldstein’s great horror tales (and the great design work of EC Comics’ best artists) years later when there was an HBO series based on the comics (straight adaptations).
