Based on the 2006 comic book series of the same name by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, The Boys premiered in 2019 on Amazon Prime Video. The series follows the eponymous team of anti-superhero vigilantes and their war against their world's corrupt caped crusaders. The Boys also features the machinations of Vought International, the corporate conglomerate that both creates and manipulates superheroes for power and profit.

The upcoming third season of The Boys marks the on-screen debut of Ackles' Soldier Boy, who has previously only ever been mentioned on the show. The character is set to play a pivotal role going forward. In the comics, the original World War II-era Soldier Boy was one of the first superheroes created by Vought. Unfortunately, he and nearly his entire battalion were killed in action, save for Greg Mallory, who would go on to found The Boys. The Soldier-Boy of the small screen has also received some amount of superpowered upgrades over his comic book counterpart, with the full Season 3 trailer showcasing the character's explosive new abilities.

Ackles gave fans an idea of what to expect from Soldier Boy's introduction to the world of The Boys and its modern-day superheroes, saying, "One of the first things that ever comes out of Soldier Boy's mouth after he looks at a big poster of Homelander is 'What the fuck?" Ackles continued, "It's just looking at the world around him, knowing he doesn't fit in and knowing things are different. And there it is, personified in this statuesque red, white and blue superhero. He's not thrilled about that. The relationship is immediately contentious. They have their words."

The Boys Season 3 hits Amazon Prime Video on June 3.
