Like most superheroes on The Boys, The Deep is a deeply flawed character who has let his power go to his head. He is egotistical and selfish—there is no doubt about that—but he also cuts a pathetic figure, whose misery and misfortune is often the cause of some of the show’s dark comedic moments. Some might even say that he is a parody of DC Comic’s Aquaman.

But, unlike the majority of The Seven, there is a desire in him to do some good in the (animal) world. On top of that, he has also been publicly shamed for his wrongdoings, and been made to apologize for them. It can be hard to pin down this character, as he seems to dance the line between right and wrong constantly, but that does not mean that he is all bad.

10 RIGHT: Getting A-Train On Board

A-Train and The Deep from The Boys TV Show

The Deep might not be the brightest of the lot, even the Supes agree on that, but he does have powers of persuasion. He can be charming as well, when he needs to be. And he uses these talents to persuade A-Train into having lunch with Alastair Adana, the Chairman of the Church of the Collective.

At the meeting, A-Train seems reluctant to join the church, but Adana is able to successfully blackmail him into doing so by using the knowledge of the speedster’s Compound V abuse against him.

9 WRONG: Harassing Starlight

Starlight and The Deep from The Boys TV Show waving

Early on in the first season of The Boys, we come face to face with The Deep’s most terrible actions—his sexual harassment of Starlight. He coerces her, makes her believe that he is the second-most powerful superhero in The Seven after Homelander, and blackmails her into an uncomfortable position.

Thankfully, his comeuppance comes around soon enough. And he is forced into an apology by Vought and made to go into a sabbatical, having been unofficially thrown off The Seven. Things only go downhill for him from thereon.

8 RIGHT: Helping Queen Maeve Blackmail Homelander

Homelander and The Deep from The Boys TV Show

In season two of the show, we see Maeve ask The Deep for a favor, to search the debris of the crashed plane that Homelander had abandoned, in return for helping him get back into The Seven. And The Deep, eager to get back into public spotlight, wholeheartedly agrees to do so.

This isn’t something he takes initiative on, but at the end of the end of the day he dives into the water and finds proof of Homelander’s wrongdoings, and Maeve later uses the very same footage in a crucial negotiation with the leader of The Seven.

7 WRONG: Ill-Advised Rescue Of A Dolphin

Dolphin on The Boys

His intentions here might be in the right. The idea to rescue a dolphin trapped inside an enclosed space, for the entertainment of humans, is a noble one. More so since he attempts the mission on his own, without taking any other superhero’s help. But, in the end, it all goes awry because he doesn’t pay attention to the details.

An ill-timed brake and the dolphin he had so lovingly strapped inside his truck flies through the windshield and crashes dead on the road. And all his planning goes to waste.

6 RIGHT: Leaving The Church Of The Collective

The Deep with the Chairman of the Church of the Collective on The Boys

A tad too late, but at the end of season two, The Deep finally comes to the realization that the Church Of The Collective is taking advantage of him. If he stayed on, they would keep promising him the thing he wanted the most—to get back in the good graces of Vought—while never truly fighting for him.

His disenchantment comes only after he hears news of A-Train, who had been fired from The Seven as well, rejoining Vought’s sought-after team. Before that, he had willingly ignored all red flags about the church.

5 WRONG: Using A Whale As A Barrier

The Deep Uses Whale To Stop The Boys

In season two, when The Deep is offered a chance to get back into The Seven, he, again, fails to truly consider the possible consequences of his plan. He enlists the help of a huge whale, named Lucy, to try and stop Billy Butcher and his boys to land on a beach. He passes their boat, quite proud of his plan, and sets himself and Lucy in their path. He is quite sure of having beaten Butcher’s team.

But what he doesn’t realize, because he doesn’t think things through, is that his adversary would have no qualms in butchering a massive sea creature in order to save themselves. So, in the end, he loses another sea-friend because of poor planning.

4 RIGHT: Finding Translucent’s Body

Translucent In A Cage On The Boys

Even though he has his share of misadventures, there are times when The Deep is capable of using his superpowers for good. One of them is when Homelander tasks him to find Translucent’s body in season one.

He asks his friends in the sea, uses his talents to the full, to find the box containing the erstwhile superheroes decimated remains. In fact, whenever there is need for searching the depths of the sea, The Deep is more than adequate in finding whatever had been lost.

3 WRONG: Trying To Save A Lobster

The Deep At The Supermarket In The Boys

The Deep, dressed in a trenchcoat, is at a supermarket, feeling quite low, when he chances upon a few lobsters in the seafood section. He even has a conversation with one of them, promising the crustacean that he’ll save it from an untimely death.

There is a moment of joy when things seem to be going in that direction. But then, because the superhero fails to communicate that he wants the lobster alive, the moment is shattered, just like the animal’s body, right in front of him. And The Deep falls deeper into a state of misery.

2 RIGHT: Caring About The Natural World

The Deep Promoting Oceanland On The Boys

The Deep’s one redeeming quality is his love for sea creatures and the natural world. He genuinely cares for animals and wants a better environment for the future. He even tries telling the people at Vought that he would like to take on more serious assignments, that would address these issues, but his ideas are all dismissed.

Instead, he is forced to promote a company called Oceanland, one that tortures sea creatures and keeps them caged in captivity. His despair is all the more pronounced since he can fully communicate with the said animals, and he knows all that they suffer through.

1 WRONG: Being A Sycophant

Alastair Adana On The Boys

In the presence of a dominating personality, The Deep often suppresses his own views to align with whatever the other person is saying. This is most notably evident when Alastair Adana is on screen with him. Just to be in his good books, he often instantly changes views to support Adana’s own line of thinking. He'll do anything, in fact, to please the Fresca-loving Chairman of the Church of the Collective.

This trait allows Adana to take control of his life—going so far as to assigning the superhero a wife and persuading him to hand over his personal bank account to the church.
