The Boys executive producer Eric Kripke promises that the upcoming third-season opener is wilder than anything fans could imagine.
"One tease I can say is, in the first 15 minutes of episode one we have not just the craziest sequence we have ever done, but the craziest sequence pretty much anybody has ever done," Kripke told SFX Magazine. "It's so jaw-droppingly insane. It's so much fun. It's the best job I have ever had, to think about this stuff. It's always the frosting on the cake."
Kripke also explained the process of putting such a ludicrous scene together, saying, "If we are spending three weeks to break an episode, we spend two-and-a-half banging down on character, plot and emotion. Then, only when all the painful work is done, we take a break – it's almost like a wine spritzer – and take a couple of days to say, 'Now, let's all think of the craziest shit we can to lay in on top of the hard work we had already done.'"
The Boys is based on the 2006 comic book series of the same name by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson. The series follows the eponymous team of anti-superhero vigilantes in their various attempts to disrupt their world's cruel, calculating caped crusaders, as well as their corporate overlords in the form of Vought International. After the series premiered on Prime Video in 2019, it quickly established a reputation for being almost every bit as gory as its comic book predecessor. Fans have already seen at least some of the outrageous action to come in The Boys' third season courtesy of its frenetic trailer and marketing material.
Kripke has previously remarked on just how far The Boys Season 3 is willing to go, especially in its adaptation of one of the most notorious storylines from the source material - Herogasm. "It's a massive orgy and a hilarious, weird setting for the show. It’s infamous among fans of The Boys," he said. "One thing we managed is to get several genuinely emotional, heartbreaking scenes in that orgy. If there is anything that The Boys does well, we can break your heart in the middle of an orgy!”
Fans can experience all the over-the-top action for themselves when The Boys Season 3 premieres on Prime Video on June 3.
