According to The Boys showrunner Eric Kripke, fans who tune into the satirical superhero series' upcoming college-oriented spinoff, The Boys Presents: Varsity, can expect cameos by some familiar faces.

During a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Kripke was asked if any established characters from The Boys would be popping up in Varsity. "Yeah," the showrunner responded. "Without spoiling anything, I think there will be several very, very cool cameos. Because it's a Vought-run college, so crossover with Vought characters is inevitable, really."

Based on the comic book series of the same name by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, The Boys initially premiered on Prime Video in 2019. The show is currently in the midst of its third season, with a fourth on the way. The Boys follows the titular group of vigilantes, which exists to keep superheroes -- or "supes" -- in check. Their primary target is The Seven, an elite team of supes controlled by the corrupt Vought International.

The Boys Presents: Varsity was initially announced in September 2020 as a live-action spinoff series taking place in a college setting. Shortly after the initial announcement, Kripke revealed that the spinoff would focus on the G-Men, a team of supes from Ennis and Robertson's original comic that acts as a parody of Marvel's X-Men. The G-Men were mentioned in the first season of Prime Video's adaptation of The Boys.

In addition to being inspired by the G-Men, Varsity takes some cues from The Hunger Games. The series follows a group of young adult supes who attend the Vought-owned Godolkin University School of Crimefighting, where their skills are put to the test in various challenges. Prime Video officially ordered Varsity to series in September 2021, with Michele Fazekas and Tara Butters attached as showrunners and Kripke attached as an executive producer.

Varsity stars Lizze Broadway as Emma Shaw and Jaz Sinclair as Marie Moreau, with fellow series regulars Chance Perdomo, Maddie Phillips, London Thor, Derek Luh, Asa Germann and Shelley Conn having been cast in undisclosed roles. The recurring cast includes Patrick Schwarzenegger as Golden Boy, as well as Sean Patrick Thomas and Marco Pigossi, whose characters have also yet to be revealed. Production on the spinoff began in May 2022 and is expected to wrap in October. Varsity will be the second major show to spin out of The Boys, following the animated anthology series The Boys Presents: Diabolical, which premiered on Prime Video in March 2022.
