Amazon's TV adaptation of The Boys stars everyone's favorite foul-mouthed Englishman: Billy Butcher, played by Karl Urban. After his wife was assaulted by Homelander and disappeared, Billy has become exceptionally jaded — and really, we can't blame him.

But his low tolerance for idiots and loud mouth paired with lack of a filter makes him hilarious. The writers gave him some quotes that had us in tears during this nihilistic comic show, and these are a few of the most hilarious quotes ranked on just how doubled over we were.

Updated on December 4, 2023 by Joshua M. Patton: Billy Butcher did not disappoint when he returned for the second season of Amazon Prime Video's hit series The Boys, which meant he left fans busting a gut thanks to his hilarious one-liners throughout the whole season. While this was largely revealed to be a cover to help Butcher deal with his own trauma, supes-related or otherwise, he still dropped more than a few comedic quotes to keep the rest of this team in the dark and the fans in stitches. As fans await the fourth season of The Boys, here's Billy Butcher's best to tide "you lot" over.

15 "Daddy's Home"

Season 2, Episode 1 "The Big Ride"

Don’t you worry. Daddy's home.

The Boys Reveals First Look at Season 4 With New Posters for Homelander and Billy Butcher
Election-themed posters for The Boys reveal a first look at the upcoming fourth season.

The first season of The Boys ended uncertainly for Billy Butcher, as he abandoned the Boys to take the fight to Homelander, who quickly took control and brought Butcher with him to Becca's secret home where she lived with Homelander's son. Butcher stayed away from the team after Becca made a deal with Homelander to save his life.

Though, as soon as he got the call from Frenchie, he rejoined the Boys. His entrance line, while flippant and filled with Butcher's usual charm and comedy, reveals his true feelings for the team he's assembled. It's not his most biting quote, but these four simple words encapsulate how Butcher sees his team and himself, especially after learning about his former wife's and Homelander's son.

14 "Never Go Into Shark-Infested Waters Without Chum"

Season 2, Episode 6 "The Bloody Doors Off"

The Boys Billy Butcher and Hughie

Never go into shark-infested waters without chum.

As Starlight began to secretly work closer with Hughie and the Boys against her teammates in the Seven, Butcher mostly kept her at a safe distance until he invited her along with them to the Sage Grove Center, where Vought was experimenting with Compound V.

While it initially seemed like he was finally welcoming her onto the team, he quickly revealed in his own unique way that she was just there as bait in case the Seven arrived, as they would likely turn on the traitor first and give Billy a better chance of escaping the mission alive. Now that she's publicly broken with the Seven, she can't help the Boys in the same way, anymore.

13 "People Love That Cozy Feeling That Supes Give Them"

Season 1, Episode 1, "The Name of the Game."

The Boys Billy Butcher

People love that cozy feeling that Supes give them. Some golden **** to swoop out of the sky and save the day, so you don't got to do it yourself.

This is more of a sardonic smile of a quote, but it's still enough to draw a reaction. It's relatable. If we had superheroes, we surely would want them to save the day, so we wouldn't have to do it ourselves.

Billy may often seem like he's bulldozing around the place without much of a plan in mind, but it's quite obvious when he says things like this that he's actually a very insightful and intelligent guy. People may not want to face the negatives of humanity, but this would be one of them if superheroes were real. Of course we'd expect them to do everything for us.

12 "Translucent's Always Been My Favorite."

The Boys Billy Butcher and Hughie

I must say what a pleasure it is to see so many more women are in positions of power. You know what I mean? You know, if I'm perfectly honest, Translucent's always been my favorite.

The Boys: Here's What Happened to Billy Butcher's Brother, Lenny, in the Comics
Lenny Butcher committed suicide prior to the events of The Boys Season 1, but his death in the comic was quite different.

It seems like an innocuous comment. If you tuned into the show during this episode and hadn't seen anything more, or weren't familiar with Billy, then he's simply pointing out his favorite member of the Seven — right?

The truth is, he's saying this to Hughie and his oblivious date Annie January, otherwise known as Starlight. What Starlight doesn't know is that Hughie murdered Translucent very recently, and Billy is well aware the superhero is dead despite everyone pretending otherwise. It's a tense moment, but it definitely draws a nervous chuckle at the sheer audacity of Billy's very obvious threat.

11 "We'll Cross That Bridge When We Burn It"

Season 1, Episode 3, "Get Some"

The Boys Billy Butcher and Hughie

We'll cross that bridge when we burn it.

The phrase is typically, "we'll cross that bridge when we come to it." Billy shows a wary self-awareness in changing the last words to 'burn it' because the Boys don't really have any friends as a gang. It's a commonly used malaphor, sometimes stated as "We'll burn that bridge when we come to it."

Their intentions might be vaguely-good at best (they're chaotic neutral, to use Dungeons and Dragons terms), but they definitely aren't very warm and don't tend to make friends wherever they go. Everyone ends up hating them because of their methods.

10 "A Stranger Is Just A Friend You Ain't Met Yet"

Season 2 Episode 3: "Over the Hill with the Swords of a Thousand Men"

The Boys Billy Butcher

A stranger is just a friend you ain't met yet.

While Billy and his anti-supe team originally had the backing of the US government, his work with the Boys hasn't been as well funded, which sometimes requires Butcher to acquire their essentials through less than legal means. When the Boys needed a yacht to transport Kimiko's superpowered brother in the second season, Butcher stole the boat without the knowledge of his team.

When the Coast Guard revealed it was stolen and the Boys confronted Billy, he used his own warped sense of logic to explain himself, as usual. This quote really captures how Butcher sees the world, and the way he uses his hilarious wit to cover up the ways he misleads others.

9 "Your Mum's Best China"

Season 1, Episode 6 "The Innocents"

You're a bunch of pathetic Supe-worshipping ****s. I bet you'd thank a Supe if they shit on your mum's best china. Did it ever occur to you that they split your spine or broke your d*ck just for a laugh? Where's your f*cking rage?! Your self-respect?! Sitting here in your little share circle. Having a little whinge and a moan. F*ck 'letting go.' You should be out there with a f*cking chain saw, going after 'em! Just a bunch of scared f*cking rabbits.

During the first season, Billy and Hughie end up visiting a support group for victims of supes. This turns out to be more like people lamenting about how they were damaged by supes but were unlucky, or fortunate to have met them at all.

Billy is disgusted by the blind hero-worship of the supes and dissolves into a fairly intense rant about how these people shouldn't be grateful, they should be angry, and these are the best line from the entire rant. It highlights both how ineffective the group is for truly addressing trauma but, more importantly, just how deeply injured Butcher still is by what he's experienced.

8 "Comparatively Speaking, This Will Be A Piece of Cake"

Season 1, Episode 5 "Good for the Soul"

The Boys Billy Butcher Hughie Campbell

Hughie, you've done a murder. Comparatively speaking, this will be a piece of cake.

While his methods are usually brutal and dispassionate, Butcher has been responsible for several positive changes in the story.

Hughie is very nervous about the idea of infiltrating Ezekiel during a religious ceremony when Homelander is present. His fear of Homelander is still very high, even though their mission isn't particularly difficult.

Billy is, perhaps sensibly, a little befuddled by this and points out that Hughie has literally killed a supe — talking to Ezekiel (and blackmailing him) should be a piece of cake in comparison to finding the guts to blow someone up. Of course, Hughie did that by accident, so it's no large comfort.

7 "We Didn't Bring Him Here For A Happy Meal"

Season 1, Episode 2 "Cherry"

Billy Butcher with a determined expression in The Boys.

We didn't bring him here for a f*cking Happy Meal!

This has to be one of the funniest throwaway lines in the whole series, and we're not sure why it makes everyone laugh so much. If we had to guess, though, we'd say it's because Billy is the antithesis of the kid-friendly meal that makes people happy.

The moment happens when Hughie realizes the supe he just helped capture is marked for death. Butcher offers this reply when Hughie asks, incredulously, if they're going to kill the guy. He's pretty unapologetic about his intentions to hurt and kill people, especially supers. He is shameless about the collateral damage it causes, considering any of it less than the supes cause when they're "helping."

6 "It's Like Hughie Infected the Both of You"

Season 2, Episode 2 "Proper Preparation and Planning"

The Boys

It’s like Hughie infected the both of you with a raging case of vagina.

Billy has never been the most sensitive member of the Boys, which is perfectly displayed in the second season after Kimiko's brother attacks the team and then disappeared with his sister while Billy attempted to rally his troops and leave.

However, when MM and Frenchie sided with Hughie and decided to go after Kimiki because she was now one of them, Billy made his displeasure known with his team's newfound conscience in pure Butcher fashion. Still, his use of a gendered insult suggests he's as unenlightened as Homelander in some ways, showing how the team is starting to understand their mission better than Butcher himself.

5 "Where Are You?"

Season 1, Episode 6 "The Innocents"

The Boys

I've got my phone linked to the find your shithead friends app. Now where the f*ck are you?

Sometimes, the Boys need to avoid Billy. It doesn't happen often, because he is good and they need him. But Billy can be very extreme, jumping to violence right away, and sometimes the others don't want to do that and have other plans. However, on one occasion when they do avoid him, he manages to track them down fairly easily.

When asked why, he edits the name of the Find Your Friends app for his own purposes, before issuing some Butcher-style commands for his soldiers to form up for their next battle. This quote comes in fifth on the list because with just a few simple words, it shows how much Butcher needs the Boys, but how his standoffish, aloof veneer is used to cover his true feelings (while actually fooling no one).

4 "Running A Bit Low On Mind Your Own Business"

Season 1, Episode 5 "Good for the Soul"

The Boys Billy Butcher

I just had to pop down to the shop. I was running a bit low on mind your own f***ing business.

The Boys: 10 Times Butcher Did The Right Thing For The Wrong Reasons
Billy Butcher may want to do the right thing, but for the leader of The Boys, doing the right thing often means doing some very bad things.

You have to give it to Billy — he has the most amazing comebacks. This is one of those quips that he seems to throw out without even thinking, demonstrating his incredibly sharp sense of humor. Sure, it might leave the people he's talking to flushing red with humiliation, but it certainly makes the viewer laugh and wish we could come up with comebacks like this on our own.

Funny though it is, he tells this to Mother's Milk in order to maintain a level of secrecy and privacy from his own teammates, despite his demands on their time. It reinforces how Butcher keeps even his friends at arm's length.

3 "Translucent Doesn't Even Mean Invisible"

Season 1, Episode 1 "The Name of the Game"

The Boys Translucent

I'll tell you who you are, you're a moron. 'Translucent' doesn't even mean 'invisible,' it means 'semi-transparent.'

At the beginning of season one, Translucent hunts down and attacks Hughie. Billy intervenes but is almost overpowered and when Translucent is towering over him and asking if Billy knows who he is (inferring that he's a superhero and unbeatable), Billy calls him out on the fact his name isn't even fitting. It's a funny, kind-of-meta moment because a lot of the viewers had already been thinking it.

2 "When You Put Them Together They're The Spice Girls"

Season 1, Episode 4 "The Female of the Species"

The Boys

When you put them together, they're the goddamn f***ing Spice Girls.

When trying to explain to the Boys why they can't split up, Billy decides on a motivational speech. He uses the Spice Girls as an example of a band that was very popular while together but didn't garner as much success in their solo years.

As Frenchie points out, it's a pretty terrible motivational speech in terms of power and getting the Boys hyped up, but it's certainly a hilarious analogy — especially considering how hard he goes with it, and how much he actually seems to know about the Spice Girls. Surprisingly, for a guy like Billy, it's one of the series' stupidest jokes (in the best way).

1 "Now, Remember What I Told You"

Season 2, Episode 8 "What I Know"

Billy Butcher and Ryan The Boys

Now, remember what I told ya.

One of Billy Butcher's funniest lines from the second season actually serves as a setup when he reminds Becca and Homelander's son Ryan of his last bit of parental advice before he sent Ryan to live with a safe family in the season finale. Ryan and Billy had a troubled beginning to their relationship and for a time it looked like the young boy would follow in his father's footsteps.

Though when Ryan answers "don't be a ****," to Butcher's question, fans got the sense that Ryan might be headed in the right direction after all. Unfortunately, his father Homelander is perhaps the biggest bad influence on the planet. This quote perfectly sums up Billy Butcher's philosophy -- about life, supes, and everything else -- in four simple, albeit one very offensive, words, making it the most outstanding Butcher quote in the series to date.
