In the comic title The Boys, the most that the Female speaks is by laughing out loud. For the Amazon Prime series, in addition to giving the character a name, she was given the ability to communicate in a unique way.

At New York Comic Con 2021, actor Karen Fukuhara discussed how her character Kimiko was able to speak in Season 2 through her own unique version of American Sign Language (ASL) created for the show. The conversation began when a panel moderator asked the cast members in attendance what surprised them the most about the show's second season. For Fukuhara, her character being able to speak through sign language and cultivating that for the series was the most surprising part.

"I had no idea that was coming when we ended Season 1," Fukuhara said, saying she was "shocked and happily surprised" to learn that new character development. In the first season, Kimiko only attempts to speak at one point while she is alone, though she is unable to get any words out. Being able to give Kimiko a voice was a great experience for Fukuhara, as well as working with her sign language coach to make the new language form.

"It was lovely working with my sign language coach," Fukuhara continued. "Her name's Amanda and she knows ASL. She's hard of hearing and has been living with this her while life...and when she came on set, it was just a really special connection I had with her that I think maybe you can see on screen as well."

While Kimiko is able to talk through sign language, the series felt it was important to distinguish it from typical ASL for purposes of her character dynamics with the Boys. Fukuhara said, "It is completely different from ASL. One of the reasons was because if she was able to speak ASL, then we would think that maybe M.M. or someone in the Boys would know how to translate that, and we really wanted it to be something special between Kenji [Kimiko's brother] and Kimiko and the language that was created among necessity and survival."

It appears that Fukuhara is not the only one who will have to know this new form of sign language though, since Season 2 left off with Frenchie (Tomer Kapon) learning the language to speak to Kimiko. Fukuhara's voice coach did help make the language in a way that "it's really easy to remember," according to the actor, saying that Amanda "created the language, and there are certain words in there that we tweaked a bit" for that reason.

The Boys will reportedly return towards the middle of 2022, starring Fukuhara, Kapon, Jack Quaid, Antony Starr, Erin Moriarty, Chace Crawford and more. The first two seasons of the series are available to stream on Amazon Prime Video.
