Kevin Smith watches The Boys, and feels that Homelander actor Antony Starr deserves an Emmy for his performance as the psychopathic supe.

Speaking about the Prime Video series and its "Herogasm" episode on the FatMan Beyond podcast, Smith says (at the 1:27:20 mark), "Everyone's like, 'Herogasm!' but it's like 'F--k that! This is the episode where Homelander and Soldier Boy go toe-to-toe.' And then f--king [Billy] Butcher jumps in, and it becomes a three-way f--king fight to a standstill, essentially, where [Homelander] gets chased off." Then, Smith sings his praise for Starr.

'[He] deserves an Emmy nomination at least," Smith says, "If not, a f--king win. Like, an incredible performance. Not just like 'Oh, you love to hate him like J.R. Ewing,' but he's f--king terrifying." Homelander is Vought International's most profitable superhero, possessing powers nearly identical to DC Comics' Superman. However, instead of fighting for "Truth, Justice and a Better Tomorrow," Starr's supe commits violent acts -- including rape and murder -- and constantly threatens or simply kills those around him.

The Boys Season 2 earned the series five Emmy nominations in 2021, including Best Drama Series, though none of the nominations were for acting categories. At the Hollywood Critics Association (HCA) TV Awards that year, actors Karl Urban, Aya Cash and Giancarlo Esposito were nominated in acting categories for their roles as Billy Butcher, Stormfront and Stan Edgar, respectively, but Starr was left off of that list. The actor did win both "Best Actor in a Superhero Series" and "Best Villain in a Series" at the first Critics' Choice Super Awards though.

There is the chance that Starr can be nominated for an Emmy in 2022 for his work as Homelander, and if not in 2022, the show will return for a fourth season. Season 3 has taken the character to new levels of aggression and insanity, showing him reveal his true personality to the public, killing other superheroes and worse. The series' third season introduces a supe that can rival Homelander's alpha status though, Soldier Boy, played by Supernatural alum Jensen Ackles.

As of writing, only one episode is left to release for Season 3, titled "The Instant White-Hot Wild." The prior episode leaves off on a bombshell cliffhanger involving Homelander, though fans will have to tune in to the finale to witness what comes of it.

The first seven episodes of The Boys Season 3 and the show's first two seasons are available to stream on Prime Video. The Season 3 finale hits the service on July 8, 2022.
