The Boys showrunner Erik Kripke insisted that Season 3's adaptation of the "Herogasm" storyline will break fans' hearts.

In an interview with SFX magazine, Kripke hyped the Prime Video series' version of the comics' most controversial arc. "It's a massive orgy and a hilarious, weird setting for the show. It’s infamous among fans of The Boys," he said. "One thing we managed is to get several genuinely emotional, heartbreaking scenes in that orgy. If there is anything that The Boys does well, we can break your heart in the middle of an orgy!”

"Herogasm" is an annual invite-only party at which Vought-sponsored superheroes satisfy their most debauched appetites. It first appeared in the six-issue spinoff series of the same name by The Boys creators Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson and was designed to spoof superhero crossover events like DC's Infinite Crisis and Marvel's Civil War. The series was subsequently repackaged as the fifth volume of The Boys' collected editions.

The Boys star Jensen Ackles recently revealed that shooting the "Herogasm" scenes traumatized the show's crew. "I know I was just kind of very curious as to how that was going to work. And even the director was like 'I don't know what I'm shooting anymore.' Our crew looked traumatized," he said. His co-star Chace Crawford expressed concerns for the fans themselves, saying, "I'm scared for them to see some of the stuff [in Season 3]. I haven't seen a lot of the stuff that I'm excited to see how it turns out. I mean... we did do 'Herogasm.'"

Costume designer Laura Jean Shannon recently confirmed that Crawford is himself part of The Boys' racy approach to the genre, noting that The Deep's outfit is a comment on over-sexualized female superhero outfits. "I call that equal opportunity objectification... we've been patting boobs and butts and making ladies look luscious forever," she said. "So it was actually really exciting to be given the opportunity to kind of hyper-sexualize a male character in The Boys."

By contrast, Shannon made the deliberate choice to tone down the live-action version of Aya Cash's gender-swapped Nazi supervillain Stormfront. "[W]hat we wanted to do was to be a little bit more delicate with how we portrayed her by using visual cues and influences that weren't so spot on," she explained.

The Boys Seasons 1 and 2 are currently streaming on Prime Video. Season 3 arrives on June 3.
